"I'm not big on labels", O'Rourke told reporters in December when asked whether he could be considered a progressive. "They are browner and blacker than most of America".

O'Rourke joins a crowded field of Democrats who want to challenge President Donald Trump in the November 2020 vote. Then he added: "Is he insane or is that just how he acts?" "Still, there's a lot in O'Rourke's record we're wary of, most notably his comment during a Senate debate past year that it's a false choice between fossil fuels and renewable energy".

He released a video message pledging a positive campaign that embraces the opportunity of facing challenges at what he called a "moment of maximum peril and maximum potential".

The bid comes three and a half months after a narrow loss for Senate in Texas, a campaign that catapulted the 46-year-old, three-term lawmaker from El Paso to national prominence.

In 2018 speculation began that Mr O'Rourke may decide to run after his campaign for the US Senate proved his worth.

Beto O'Rourke doesn't seem to have any policy positions on his campaign website yet - but he does have lots of merchandise for sale.

The former congressman had been testing the waters for a presidential run in unconventional ways.

He took a well-publicized road trip across the American Southwest, stopping at colleges and diners. He used Instagram and Facebook to stream conversations with people in his neighborhood and life, including a now famous stop at the dentist.

Vanity Fair quoted O'Rourke as saying in an interview published on Wednesday that he was aware of his disadvantage as a white man at a time when many in the Democratic Party want a woman or a person of color for president.

"But unlike Trump, O'Rourke can appear nearly too innocent to be a politician-too decent, too wholesome, the very reason he became popular also the same reason he could be crucified on the national stage". During that race, he enjoyed prolific media coverage. He's also planning a campaign rally in El Paso on March 30.

The decision will put O'Rourke among the second-tier of candidates; he's polling in sixth, wedged between Sens.

The White House run will also prompt greater scrutiny of his policy proposals and track record in Congress.

However, O'Rourke didn't expand on the issue in his response to Trump's critique.

'I want to be in it, ' he adds. "Man, I'm just born to be in it". 'I do. I think I'd be good at it'. "This is a defining moment of truth for this country and for every single one of us. Especially in the fact that there are some really great candidates out there right now".
