"Voting against leaving without a deal and for an extension does not solve the problems we face".

MPs approved by 412 to 202 a motion setting out the option to have a short delay by agreeing to a Brexit deal by March 20 or a longer delay if no deal can be agreed in time.

The EU's chief Brexit negotiator Michel Barnier on Wednesday said Brussels will not rework the painstakingly-negotiated withdrawal agreement. "It was not in the best interests of the people of Wrexham or the rest of the country".

Farage, who is still an MEP and was speaking from Strasbourg, said he never trusted the British political class to honour the 2016 Brexit referendum and that he was "preparing for some time" for this type of scenario.

They defeated by the narrowest of margins an opposition attempt let Parliament choose an alternative to May's rejected divorce deal and force the government to negotiate it with the EU.

Parliament will vote later Thursday on whether to extend the March 29 deadline for a deal.

Lawmakers also voted to rule out the idea of holding a second Brexit referendum - at least for now.

MPs will attempt to put forward alternatives through amendments to Thursday's vote, including one calling for a new referendum on Britain's European Union membership, although this is not expected to pass. The vote didn't prevent lawmakers from trying again later to get Parliament's support for another referendum.

Mrs May, with both her authority and her voice faltering, confirmed to MPs they would now be offered a new vote today on whether to delay Brexit.

Among the 17 Tories who defied the party whip was work and pensions minister Sarah Newton, who resigned from her post in order to do so.

Theresa May has previously revealed that Mr Trump told her to "sue the EU" and "not go into negotiations".

"Today is about extension and about the process. the Labour Party is supporting the public vote on any deal that gets through by the Prime Minister, but today is about a different issue", Shadow Brexit Secretary Keir Starmer said.

A spokesman for European Council President Donald Tusk, representing EU governments, said Britain would have to provide a "credible justification" for any request to delay Brexit.

Any delay in the Brexit process would require the unanimous approval of all 27 remaining European Union member states, which in effects gives the bloc the power to dictate the terms of an extension. They could have had the vote and it should have gone smoothly.

Guy Verhofstadt, Brexit co-ordinator for European Parliament, said Thursday that an extension would not be granted without additional clarity from London.

Former minister Edward Leigh said: "You may not like the deal, it's not flawless, but it delivers Brexit and let's go for it". She didn't listen to that and it's fine.

The EU also prefers that any extension be limited, finishing before its own elections in late May. "The EU will want to know what use we mean to make of such an extension and this House will have to answer that question".

EU Council chief Donald Tusk said Thursday that the bloc could approve a long postponement "if the United Kingdom finds it necessary to rethink its Brexit strategy and build consensus around it".

It's possible May might bring her plan to Parliament for yet a third vote next week if she is able to forge a compromise with the dissenters in her ranks.
