The young green activist embarked on her crusade in August previous year to challenge inaction on climate change issues.

Greta Thunberg, 16, has been hailed by Freddy Andre Oevstegaard and two other members of the Socialist Left Party for her cause to stop climate change, which 'will be the cause of wars, conflict and refugees'.

"Greta Thunberg has launched a mass movement in which I see, perhaps, the main contribution to peace".

Friday's strike is expected to be the biggest yet as evidence mounts of the climate emergency facing the planet. After Friday, some students plan to continue skipping school on Fridays until political leaders take action.

"The University of Malta student council shall be rallying students and youths in Malta to participate in this Friday's global students4climate strikes. It is the biggest threat in human history and we will not accept the world's decision-makers" inaction that threatens our entire civilisation.

Méabh Mackenzie is organising a protest with about 30 fellow pupils from Daliburgh primary school on the island of South Uist, with the express goal of standing in solidarity with other threatened island communities across the globe.

One of the strike organisers, Year 13 student Molly Doyle said she believes the strike is the best way to create awareness of the situation.

Her successful campaigning has resulted in her giving lectures at the UN Climate Talks and World Economic Forum. "They are arguing about things like Brexit but we need them to act now on climate change. because in 12 years we can't turn anything back".

This year's Nobel Peace Prize has 304 candidates, of which 219 are individuals and 85 organisations, the Norwegian Nobel Committee reported last month.

"I think we have reached a tipping point where enough scientists are telling it like it is and not being so afraid of being alarmist", Thunberg told New Scientist on Wednesday, adding it's been frustrating that many people are paying more attention to her age than the issue at hand.

She has even provided a template letter on the Facebook event page, Global Climate Strike, for those hoping to attend the protest to give to their schools.
