Police officers guarded the entrance of the Raul Brasil State School in Suzano Brazil Wednesday after authorities said two teenagers entered the school and began shooting at students

Governor of Sao Paulo, Joao Doria, condemned the "cruel murder" The official arrived at the shooting scene shortly after the incident.

The shooting happened at about 09:30 local time (12:30 GMT) when the students were in a break at the state school in Suzano, near São Paulo.

The identities of the victims and the alleged attackers - who were said to be former students at the school aged between 20 and 25 - have not yet been released.

Another ten people, mostly school children, were shot and injured, with several in serious condition, said police.

Despite Brazil being one of the world's most violent countries, school shootings are rare.

President Jair Bolsonaro ran on a platform that included promises to crack down on criminals, in part by expanding public access to guns.

"I heard a lot of screaming", she said.

Doria said the school had been evacuated and police were inspecting what appeared to be possible explosives left by the gunmen.

While gun laws are considered strict in Brazil, it is not hard to illegally purchase a weapon. "I opened the gate to my house and I saw children jumping over the school's wall".

"We can't let those who take advantage of this tragedy speak about how disarmament is the solution", he tweeted, adding: "Weak and shameful 'disarmament farce, ' which gave guns to criminals and prevented self-defence".

Marcelo Salles, commander of police forces in Sao Paulo state, spoke just outside the school and said that in his over three decades of service, he had "never seen anything like this, it was an unspeakably brutal crime".

He said it was not yet known whether the two assailants were former pupils at the school. "It is the saddest thing I have seen in my life".
