Met Éireann has declared Storm Gareth and issued Status Orange and Yellow weather warnings with "damaging gusts" of wind expected this week.

A yellow warning for snow and ice continues through the early part of Monday with travel disruption possible.

The Met Office said: "Some roads and railways are likely to be affected with longer journey times by road, bus and train services".

Heading into tonight, an area of low pressure will bring a spell of heavy rain and showers.

"Gusts of 50-55mph are likely inland and up to 65mph along western coasts." said Mr Gundersen.

In a statement on its website, the Met Office says: 'A spell of strong northwesterly winds is expected to develop across southwest Scotland late on Tuesday evening then extend across much of England and Wales through Wednesday.

In addition to the strong winds, Storm Gareth will bring some heavy rain for parts of the United Kingdom overnight Monday into Tuesday, particularly across northern England where a yellow warning for rain is in place from midnight tonight to midday tomorrow (Tuesday).

A band of heavy rain will also push south-eastwards, and will be followed by heavy showers during Tuesday and Wednesday.

This afternoon will be windy, but the gusty westerly winds will gradually decrease.

Yellow warnings have also been issued for strong winds on Tuesday and Wednesday next week.

"As before, Met Éireann forecasters will work in close co-operation with our colleagues from the Met Office in the United Kingdom to keep all the peoples of these islands warned of impending severe weather".

Cloud will increase from the south-west later today with rain arriving in parts of Munster and south Connacht towards evening.
