".to get it done here at Arnie's place knowing that my wife and the kids were watching back home", Molinari told NBC.

But the 37-year-old Victorian said his disappointment did not last long when greeted by his family.

Tommy Fleetwood, to his huge credit after tumbling to a 76 on day three, improved by eight shots.

Molinari drained more than 146 feet of putts - 32 more than Fitzpatrick and McIlroy combined. I feel pretty comfortable with everything out there. "I hit fairways, I hit solid shots into greens, it's just asking a lot of yourself to try and hole 25-footers all day to make birdies". "I've seen so many putts on TV like that and to do it yourself it's really incredible".

Fitzpatrick did not have the lowest round of the day, but his five-under 67 was enough to propel him to the lead at nine under, ahead of defending champion McIlroy.

Defending champion Rory McIlroy, who won past year with a 18-under 270 total, fired a 70 and is tied for 31st.

Bradley didn't have a par until the sixth hole, and only one of those was a birdie.

Before reaching the clubhouse to watch his fellow competitors, Molinari signed his scorecard and even stopped to kiss the Claret Jug on display this week at Bay Hill. Sung Kang also had a big putt on the 18th hole, this one from 12 feet for par that sewed up the third and final spot offered for the British Open at Royal Portrush this summer. It was a bit of a disappointment for Fowler following three straight finishes in the top 30 at this event and his runner-up finish last week at the Honda Classic.

His nine-under total was sufficient for a share of third alongside Rafa Cabrera Bello and Sungjae Im.

"I was just trying to hit good shots, give myself chances", Molinari said. "I mean, I go about doing my own stuff and minding my own business". The course was firm and fast yesterday and I knew it wasn't going to be easy for the guys in the lead, so I thought there was an outside chance.

"My Sundays haven't been what I would have liked but I'm putting myself in that position", he said. He rallied from two back to win at Bay Hill a year ago.

"Probably have to say my best putting round ever". McIlroy began his round seven shots behind the leaders before jumping out to a quick start, making birdie on four of his first six holes. He hit pitching wedge that settled a foot away for a tap-in on the 15th, hit a pitch over the bunker from right of the green on the par-5 16th for a 4-foot birdie, and then finished with another pitching wedge to 10 feet for one last birdie.

McIlroy was the youngest victor of the West of Ireland Championship and Irish Close Championship, taking home the title in 2005, per K&S Sports.

Overall, McIlroy said he was pleased with his play in the new season.

"I think the golf course is playing much harder this year than in the past. So from there I started building my confidence and just saying I could get it done".
