Gandhi's jibe came after a United Kingdom media report claimed that Nirav Modi, wanted in India in the Rs 13,500 crore PNB fraud case, has been living openly in a swanky 8-million pound apartment in London's West End and is running a new diamond business just yards away. "We will take all efforts necessary to extradite Nirav Modi". Modi is living in a luxurious apartment situated in London's West End.

Separately, he is being sued in the State of California for defrauding 4.2 million dollars from Los Angeles entrepreneur Paul Alfonso; in October 2018, Modi sold two custom diamond engagement rings to Alfonso that turned out to be lab diamonds.

Modi and his uncle Mehul Choksi had fled India after being accused of defrauding the Punjab National Bank for Rs 13,000 crore in January a year ago.

'Nirav Modi is living in a "three-bedroom flat occupying half of a floor of the landmark Centre Point tower block, with views across London". The rent of the apartment is estimated to be around 17,000 pounds a month.

The ED has till date attached properties worth Rs 4,765 crore of Choksi and Nirav Modi. He was wearing a jacket made of ostrich hide, costing at least £10,000 (Rs 9.1 lakh) when a reporter tried to talk to him. Modi fled the country after allegedly siphoning off about Rs 13,000 crore from Punjab National Bank using Letters of Undertaking in collusion with his uncle Mehul Choski. When the publication asked Modi outside his office whether he'd applied for political asylum to enjoy such liberties, the billionaire refused to comment.

On Friday, hours before details about Nirav's whereabouts and life in London emerged, authorities demolished his seaside bungalow in Alibaug through a controlled explosion.

"Just because Nirav Modi has been spotted doesn't mean he will be brought back immediately", Raveesh Kumar, a spokesman for India's foreign affairs ministry said, adding that it was waiting for the United Kingdom to respond.

Though Modi's bank accounts in India have been frozen and an Interpol red notice has been issued against him, the fugitive has become involved in a new diamond business in Soho locality, the daily said. The Telegraph has also learned from a source in the British government that Nirav has been assigned a National Insurance number by the Department for Work & Pensions, and he is able to operate online bank accounts in the UK.

The Telegraph report said it was not clear why the British government had given him a National Insurance number to Nirav.

According to UK-based newspaper reports, Nirav Modi has started a new diamond business in Soho.
