Bloomberg's decision not to run leaves a major hole in the Democratic Primary for a centrist, one that Biden is likely to fill. "And I believe I would defeat Donald Trump in a general election".

Bloomberg previously considered running for president in 2016 as an Independent but ultimately made a decision to endorse and campaign for Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton.

Bloomberg has also been a vocal gun-control advocate and funds the group Everytown for Gun Safety.

Thus far, 14 Democrats have announced their candidacies, including frontrunners Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., has taken aim at politicians who've said they'll fund their own campaigns.

"The idea of a Green New Deal... stands no chance of passage in the Senate over the next two years", Bloomberg wrote.

"Gun violence and climate change are not the only urgent challenges where we must make progress even as Washington continues to ignore proven solutions". He wrote, "While there would be no higher honor than serving as president, my highest obligation as a citizen is to help the country the best way I can, right now".

He has long supported issues popular among many Democrats, including gun control and mitigating climate change, and he spent more than US$110 million (S$150 million) in the 2018 congressional elections to help elect Democrats, according to figures provided by Bloomberg Philanthropies. "That's what I'll do, including the launch of a new effort called Beyond Carbon".

Pope said that Bloomberg meant to be "the person who writes the playbook".

The focus of the initiative, he said, will focus on transition from coal-powered plants to cheaper and renewable sources of energy as well as the more ambitious move to transition from oil and gas to a clean energy economy.

"I love our country too much to sit back and hope for the best as national problems get worse", Bloomberg said. He aims to force the closure of the remaining facilities by 2030. He says Bloomberg's team hired Obama's 2008 campaign manager, David Plouffe, several days ago. Other Democratic-leaning groups, including Priorities USA, are planning ad campaigns over the coming year to target the same voters.

His aides planned to emphasize his own life story as a self-made businessman, who rose from a modest upbringing in MA to rank as the ninth-wealthiest person in the world, according to Forbes.

Neil Sroka, spokesperson for the progressive political action committee Democracy for America, said: "No surprise".

In the editorial, Bloomberg said that he has grown "more frustrated by the incompetence in the Oval Office".

"Many people have urged me to run", he wrote.
