Sunday's golf roundup: Mickelson leads delayed Pebble Beach pro

That was in 1998, when rain soaked the Monterey Peninsula in February, and the PGA Tour made a decision to play the third round the day after the PGA Championship ended up the Pacific coast at Sahalee.

"That's probably a good omen", Mickelson said.

There was plenty of sunlight for the Monday morning finish, just no drama.

Mickelson began by calmly knocking his tee shot on the par-three 17th to inside 10 feet and Casey followed suit, but when the 41-year-old failed to sink an eight-footer for birdie his hopes of snatching the win were effectively ended. Mickelson never came close to making bogey and won for the 44th time on the PGA Tour.

He started the day three shots off Casey's lead but roared to the top of the leaderboard with six birdies that put him 18-under for the tournament with two holes remaining.

"I was coming here this week with a little trepidation", said McDowell, who does not get to join McIlroy or Seamus Power in Los Angeles for this week's Genesis Open and will be playing in opposite field Puerto Rico Open next week rather than the $2.25 million WGC Mexico Championship.

He also won the Pro-Am with Don Colleran, the chief sales officer for FedEx.

The American is on 18 under with two holes left to play, with playing partner Paul Casey on 15 under.

"I take a lot from this", Casey said. The other three times he was 2 over par or worse in the final round. But he said he understood Casey's perspective.

Mickelson made his big run starting with a 9-iron to a foot behind the cup on the par-4 ninth.

Matt Jones was a further three shots back with his even-par 72 leaving him tied 53rd, while fellow Sydney native Cameron Davis dropped six shots during a 78 that plummeted him to a three over. He had opened the week with a 69 at Pebble Beach, but that was in much nicer conditions that what he and the rest of the field faced on Sunday. He finished three shots behind Graeme McDowell in 2010, the last US Open at Pebble.

Pebble Beach was so soft that balls were plugging in the fairway when they landed. "I'll deal with that in six months".

No doubt, Mickelson wanted to get home to Southern California on Sunday night, and he clearly wasn't concerned about squandering a chance at victory because he couldn't see what he was doing.

Mickelson lives for the moment.

Mickelson now has a runner-up finish at the Desert Classic and a victory in four starts this season.

It's the thrill of competition. He's a gentleman and, at 48, he seems to just get better with age.
