The Effect of Cannabis on Sperm Stuns Researchers

In measuring the survey results with the semen sample analysis, the scientists found that those using marijuana tended to have higher sperm concentrations and counts than those who never smoked it.

According to a team at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, men who had smoked marijuana had higher sperm concentration and count than men who had never inhaled. Along with their medical history, the men were also asked if they had ever used cannabis and, if they had, whether they were still using it.

"An equally important limitation is the fact that most of the data were collected while cannabis was illegal in MA, so it is hard to know to what extent men may have under-reported use of cannabis because of social stigma or potential consequences related to insurance coverage for infertility services", Chavarro told Fox News.

The researchers said the data held even after they took into account some other factors that could have affected sperm concentration, such as age, alcohol use and cigarette smoking. Among men who claimed they never smoked marijuana, 12 percent had lower-than-normal sperm concentrations. This system sends signals to the brain and these signals may play a role in fertility, they explain. A 2015 study of Danish men who smoked a couple of times a week found they had lower sperm counts, for example.

And yet, the study still found that men who said they used marijuana at least a year ago had higher sperm counts than men who used it more recently.

They expected cannabis to have a detrimental effect on sperm count and fertility.

The researchers warn that their findings should be interpreted with caution and more research is needed to look at the effects of cannabis use on fertility.

It's possible not all the men came clean about their use of weed, given the drug's illegal status during most of the study (Massachusetts voted to legalize recreational marijuana in 2016).

"There could be a non-causal explanation, such as the effect of the male hormone testosterone on both sperm count and risk-taking behaviour such as smoking cannabis", said U.S. lead researcher Dr Jorge Chavarro, from the Harvard TH Chan School of Public Health in Boston. Participants self-reported marijuana use.

A sperm count of 15 million/mL is the the World Health Organisation's (WHO) threshold for "normal" levels.

The researchers also linked greater marijuana use to higher levels of testosterone based on the blood samples collected. Second, since semen quality is a poor predictor of fertility, these findings should not be interpreted as implying better fertility with cannabis use.

A survey found that 55 percent of men reported ever smoking marijuana in their lifetimes, and 11 percent said that they now smoked marijuana.

It is estimated that 16.5% of adults in the USA use marijuana, and support for legal recreational use of marijuana has increased dramatically in recent years.

Professor Sheena Lewis from Queen's University Belfast said: 'In studies from our lab in Queens University, Belfast, we found exactly the opposite effects. It may be that low or moderate levels of marijuana use have a beneficial effect on sperm production, but heavier use reverses this effect.

WEDNESDAY, Feb. 6, 2019 (HealthDay News) - Forget the mellow slacker image - pot smoking might actually make men more potent.

The new study was published February 6 in the journal Human Reproduction.

The researchers also noted that their study was conducted among men who visited a fertility clinic, and so the results may not necessarily apply to the general population.
