Mitch Marner’s agent says negotiations with Leafs will start after season ends

The Toronto Maple Leafs are in a very hard cap situation, with the new Auston Matthews extension, as well as the John Tavares and William Nylander contracts.

Only Connor McDavid ($12.5 million) is higher, and Matthews' teammate John Tavares now falls to third in average annual value ($11 million).

It goes without saying that having Matthews under contract through the 2023-24 season, after which he becomes an unrestricted free agent, is crucial.

Toronto selected the six-foot, 175-pound right-winger with its first pick, No. 4 overall, in the 2015 National Hockey League draft.

The Leafs hadn't reached the playoffs in back-to-back campaigns since 2003 and 2004 and haven't won a playoff series since 2004, losing in the first round to Boston previous year and Washington in 2017.

This season, Matthews is fourth in scoring on the team with 46 points (23 goals and 23 assists).

According to Chris Johnston of Sportsnet, Matthews will get 93 percent of his money in the form of signing bonuses.

Matthews was named the NHL's Rookie of the Year and named to the NHL's All-Rookie Team for 2016-2017.

Magnus Paajarvi scored two goals, Matt Duchene and Thomas Chabot scored, and Jean-Gabriel Pageau had two assists for the Senators (19-29-5), who have lost five straight. The 21-year old has 62 points in 52 games for the Maple Leafs, which is leading the team. They're trying to make a Stanley Cup push this season, but the extensions of Nylander and Matthews to join Tavares long-term have their window wide open for a long time.

There was also history in the broadcast booth with 85-year-old Bob Cole calling the game.

"It's something that's in the back of your mind". "Just from our fans, the support we get, walking around the street, being recognized, that is not something I ever really imagined as a kid growing up in Arizona to playing in a market like this".

No longer accusing the Maple Leafs of lowballing Marner or suggesting that no other player beyond his client is expected to take a hometown haircut, Ferris projected contrasting confidence about the shelved-until-summer negotiation and Marner's future with the franchise - even suggesting that the two sides have made progress toward a number that will work for both parties.

Trailing 2-1 the Leafs scored three goals in four minutes late in the second period to pull ahead.

Convincing the likes of Matthews and Nylander to remain in Toronto, while also attracting a star free agent in Tavares, is certainly a good start for Dubas. "Mitch already did them a favor on the entry-level deal". Nylander is locked up until 2024 at a cap hit slightly north of $6.9 million per season.

Toronto's victory over Ottawa was a little too back-and forth for Maple Leafs coach Mike Babcock's liking.

Morgan Rielly broke a tie midway through the third period and the Maple Leafs beat the Senators 5-4 on Wednesday night.

Marner then hesitantly asked reporters in the Maple Leafs dressing room at Scotiabank Arena what exactly his agent had said.
