Ocasio-Cortez Seeks More Co-Sponsors As the Introduction of Green New Deal Legislation Approaches

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) is set to release her much-touted Green New Deal on Thursday - a package of far-reaching, big-government proposals like health care for all, federal job guarantees and a push to eliminate US carbon emissions - but it's already receiving shade from House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.).

The resolution marks the first time Ocasio-Cortez and other lawmakers have attached legislative language onto the Green New Deal, a concept that until now has been largely undefined other than as a call for urgent action to head off catastrophic climate change and create jobs. "The green dream or whatever they call it, nobody knows what it is, but they're for it right?" Pelosi also named her Democratic members who will be on the Select Committee on Climate Crisis, with Ocasio-Cortez's name noticeably absent. "And so that's really what we're trying to accomplish with the Green New Deal". Ed Markey of MA are introducing a joint resolution Thursday laying out the main elements of a legislative plan.

The condemnation against Ocasio-Cortez was swift on Thursday as everyday conservatives and right-wing news outlets slammed the freshman lawmaker over the plan.

Progressive activists are "extremely supportive of the Green New Deal and think of it as the gold standard plan on climate, and expect their presidential candidates to be treating it as such", said Chad Bolt, associate policy director of Indivisible, a grassroots resistance group. Ed Markey held to unveil their resolution calling for a "Green New Deal". She said Pelosi asked her to serve on the committee, but she declined because it focuses on investigations.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, who appeared to brush off the resolution as a "green dream" the day before, welcomed the "enthusiasm" with which Democrats were engaging in pushing the framework.

The legislation is already backed by more than 40 House Democrats, Bloomberg reports, including House Rules Committee Chairman Jim McGovern. Suzanne Bonamici of Oregon, Julia Brownley, Jared Huffman and Mike Levin of California, Sean Casten of Illinois, Donald McEachin of Virginia and Joe Neguse of Colorado.

Ocasio-Cortez told NPR she had "no problem" saying that such an overhaul would be require "massive government intervention".

The Green New Deal goes far beyond the Clean Power Plan proposed by President Barack Obama.

The non-binding resolution outlines several goals for the United States, including meeting 100 percent of power demand from zero-emission energy sources.

Well, Ocasio-Cortez will need an income after she gets primaried out of Congress, I suppose ...
