Pence says U.S. aims for 'transition' in Venezuela

Venezuela's National Assembly head and self-proclaimed 'acting president' Juan Guaido said he believes the military is fed up of the regime

Venezuela's National Assembly head and self-proclaimed 'acting president' Juan Guaido said he believes the military is fed up of the regime

Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro proposed early parliamentary elections on Saturday, seeking to shore up his crumbling rule after a senior general defected to the opposition and tens of thousands thronged the streets in protest at his government.

"We see the possibility of avoiding this scenario by establishing dialogue", Chizhov said.

Guaido has rejected offers from Mexico's and Uruguay's presidents to negotiate with Maduro.

Spain, the United Kingdom and Germany are among nations pushing the European Union to recognize Juan Guaido "as president ad interim of Venezuela", according to a draft communique obtained by Bloomberg, in the latest move by the west to isolate President Nicolas Maduro.

Spokesmen for Russian President Vladimir Putin have been sharply critical of USA policy, saying it amounts to a coup against Maduro.

Responding to the widespread recognition of Guaidó's presidency, Russia's foreign minister Sergei Lavrov declared this week that the Kremlin would "do everything" to support the Maduro regime. "Russia is not going to bleed for Venezuelan oil".

But in a Friday tweet, Corbyn said: "The future of Venezuela is a matter for Venezuelans".

The military's support is crucial for the embattled Maduro, who is deeply unpopular largely due to an unprecedented economic crisis that has prompted an exodus of millions, but claims he is victim of a coup directed by the United States.

The sighting of two Russian planes in Venezuela this week sparked rumors that Moscow was helping the Nicolas Maduro government ship gold reserves out of the country in an attempt to quickly raise cash.

Elections for the opposition-controlled National Assembly aren't supposed to take place again until 2020. He declared that the upcoming month would become a "breaking point" in the opposition's struggle for power and called for new massive protests on February 12. He told the Associated Press on Thursday that he planned to defy a government ban on accepting the aid by sending large convoys of medicine into the country with the help of neighboring countries.

Chevron Corp. says its operations in Venezuela will continue normally for the "foreseeable future" despite newly imposed USA sanctions on Venezuelan state-owned oil company Petroleos de Venezuela SA.

Yanez does not say whether he is still in Venezuela or has left the country.

Washington has imposed sweeping sanctions on state-owned oil firm PDVSA in the toughest financial challenge yet to Maduro, as the administration of U.S. President Donald Trump openly seeks to push him from power. But the new interim head-of-state is still scrambling to secure a domestic and worldwide collation against Maduro.

Previous talks between the government and opposition have failed to change electoral conditions in the South American country, and many political leaders have been forced into exile.

A day earlier, thousands led by Guaido protested in various cities, banging pots, blowing whistles and horns, and carrying banners that read: "Armed forces, regain your dignity" and "Maduro usurper".

Guaido appeared at his building with his wife and daughter, saying, "They will not intimidate this family".

He said: "Power is evaporating from Maduro's hands with the passing of the hours".
