It looks like they've answered, but the call will still be ringing on their lock screen.

Now you can answer for yourself on FaceTime even if they don't answer#Apple explain this. Apple plans to release a software update to fix the bug "later this week", an Apple spokesperson told Reuters.

The Cupertino, California-based company was not immediately available to comment on the update on its system status page.

In what could go down as one of the most significant security flaws in Apple's history, a new software bug has been uncovered allowing users to listen to contacts via Apple's FaceTime video chat platform. Exploiting the bug requires only minor effort and it appears disabling FaceTime is the only protection from it.

The bug in question affects both iPads and iPhones running on iOS 12.1, and PCs using MacOS Mojave.

Apple has also recently been highlighting its credentials as a company that protects user privacy, using a large billboard overlooking the CES technology trade show in Las Vegas last month to declare "what happens on your iPhone, stays on your iPhone".

The bug, demonstrated through videos online, comes as an embarrassment for a company that is trying to distinguish itself by stressing its commitment to users' privacy.

Jack Dorsey, the chief executive officer of Twitter Inc., recommended that users disable FaceTime until a fix is issued. You could then add your own number and then start hearing audio from the other end, even if the person hasn't accepted the call yet. If you're running iOS 12.1 or later, you could be at risk of being spied on by whoever calls you on FaceTime.

New York Governor Cuomo issued a consumer alert warning to residents of New York about this bug.

Apple is scrambling to fix a serious bug that has been discovered in its FaceTime messaging services.

On your iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad, head to Settings - FaceTime and then toggle the button right at the top to set FaceTime on or off (a green button on screen indicates FaceTime is on).
