Kamala Harris lays out the core ideals of her 2020 campaign in her new book ‘The Truths We Hold

"I've heard people say - when I ran and ran as the first woman who would win - [people would say] 'People aren't ready, ' 'Oh it's not your time, ' 'Nobody like you has done that before, '" Harris told the audience. I ask why she is laughing in homage to the question that Esquire asked annually about Richard Nixon, but I know why she is laughing. "We've seen the moves already by Harris, so I think she will be a first-year contender right off the bat".

The senator from California is speaking at a rally in her hometown of Oakland, the formal kickoff of her campaign for the nomination. "And we will deliver that right with Medicare for All", Harris said during her speech in Oakland, California. While noting Harris' prior association with former San Francisco Mayor Willie Brown, Limbaugh posed the question: "What's the difference between Stormy Daniels and Kamala Harris?". We are going to have to learn to deal with her.

Harris, whose father is from Jamaica and whose mother is Indian, said that "in the face of powerful forces trying to sow hate and division among us, the truth is that as Americans, we have so much more in common than what separates us". These are smart people.

If elected, Harris would be the United States' first female president.

Playwright and composer Robert John Ford noted that many Democrats "agree that the primary objective for 2020 is to nominate the candidate that has the best shot at defeating Donald Trump".

According to a recent poll from the Kaiser Family Foundation, 56 percent of survey respondents said they favored a Medicare-for-all plan. She's promising free everything.

Perhaps most important, as Democrats weigh their options in the 2020 field, she made a succinct case for why she believes she would be the strongest candidate to take on Trump and not get "caught up in his insane", as one questioner put it.

The 66-year-old isn't expected to formally declare his candidacy until sometime in March. More than 100 people packed into a suburban Des Moines home of a frigid afternoon to meet him, snap photos and pepper him with questions. While he supported limits on methane and vehicle emissions as governor, he also defended hydraulic fracking and the energy industry in general.

Hickenlooper defended his environment credentials and sold himself as a pragmatist with a record of getting things done by working with both parties. "Her multi-ethnic and multi-racial background I think is a big calling card".

Later, at a Des Moines brew pub, Hickenlooper mingled with patrons and potential supporters.

She still has a long road ahead of her, with nearly two years to go until the 2020 election, but her supporters say she can not afford to take her foot off the pedal.
