Facebook to integrate Instagram, WhatsApp and Messenger

Now we know why WhatsApp’s founders quit, and it’s not good news!

Under new marching orders from Mark Zuckerberg, Facebook plans to integrate the messaging services of its three most popular apps, a move that would allow for cross-communication among users on WhatsApp, Instagram, and Facebook Messenger, according to The New York Times' Mike Isaac.

The news that Facebook will be closely integrating the three services is certainly a change in how the company previously dealt with the separate platforms.

That's right, Messenger, Instagram and Whatsapp will become one through a "long process" of integration, Facebook said in a statement to the BBC.

By offering tighter (or, rather, some) integration, Facebook could make it possible for a WhatsApp user to send a message - securely - to someone who uses Facebook but does not have a WhatsApp account. Facebook says the move would also enhance users' privacy by introducing encryption to protect the messages from being viewed by anyone except those involved in the conversation.

This, of course, will allow Facebook to increase user engagement which will increase company profits. Currently, Instagram, Messenger and WhatsApp all include their own take on the feature. "Knitting the messaging apps together shows that Facebook wants to exert more control over them, and that may lead to more internal executive conflict".

"We give people complete control over whether we use this information for ads", Zuckerberg writes in the piece, "but we don't let them control how we use it for security or operating our services". With a merged platforms, an Instagram user could send a private message to a WhatsApp user, a process not now available.

In a statement to the NYT, Facebook said it was working to provide users with "messaging experiences" that were "fast, simple, reliable and private".

However, The New York Times notes that while plans are in the works, Facebook is still only in the early stages of carrying this out and it could be 2020 until it is fully in place.

Instagram's founders Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger abandoned the company late a year ago, reportedly due to Zuckerberg's increased grip on the app. After all, WhatsApp now requires a phone number to sign up while Instagram and Messenger require email addresses and identities.

Last year WhatsApp founder Jan Koum suddenly resigned from his position at Facebook, reportedly over privacy issues.

Few websites have spun the news into how Facebook is merging WhatsApp, Instagram, and Facebook Messenger - which isn't entirely true.

For Facebook, the changes provide a better chance at making money from Instagram and WhatsApp, which now generate little revenue even though they have vast numbers of users.

The report claimed that Facebook is now in the early stage of integrating the three apps with each other.

One business opportunity involves behavior around Facebook Marketplace, a free Craigslist-like product where people can buy and sell goods on the social network.
