LaGuardia Airport Has Flights Stopped During Shutdown

A ground stop at LaGuardia Airport and widespread flight delays in NY and Florida airports Friday were due to air traffic controller absences, the Federal Aviation Administration said.

Delta Air Lines had about 200 flights delayed at LaGuardia and other airports in the Northeast on Friday morning, a spokesman said. Representatives from the Port Authority of NY and New Jersey, which oversees LaGuardia and Newark airports, as well as Philadelphia International Airport, also did not immediately return a request for comment.

Air traffic workers are making "routine mistakes" due to high levels of stress caused by the shutdown, Paul Rinaldi, president of the National Air Traffic Controllers Association, told CNN on Wednesday night. Philadelphia International Airport had reported departure delays of 1 hour and 14 minutes, but those have dropped back to normal operations by 11 a.m. LaGuardia delays were averaging 1 hour 26 minutes.

White House spokeswoman Sarah Sanders said in a statement: "The President has been briefed and we are monitoring the ongoing delays at some airports".

Air traffic controllers have worked more than a month without pay - and union leaders fear a mass exodus will put travelers at risk and cripple the airline industry.

"Presently, I view my position to be a hostage for a racist fantasy, which is what I view the wall as", one air traffic controller, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, told Gothamist, referencing President Trump's calls for a wall along the southern border.

The staffing problems were at air traffic centers in Jacksonville, Florida and a Washington D.C. center that controls high-altitude air traffic over seven states.

As Vox's Dara Lind noted, "It's the first time the partial government shutdown, which has now lasted five weeks, has affected air traffic, although some airports have had to briefly reduce the number of security checkpoints due to Transportation Security Administration (TSA) personnel shortages".

The Gartman Letter editor and publisher Dennis Gartman, USA Today congressional reporter Eliza Collins and United Capital CEO Joe Duran discuss their concerns over the partial government shutdown disrupting the markets and economy.

FAA officials were working Friday to mitigate the staff shortage, they said. "The #TrumpShutdown has already pushed hundreds of thousands of Americans to the breaking point", tweeted House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. "This is reckless, what has been going on with the shutdown". TSA employees at airports have been calling out sick in protest, with 10 percent of scheduled workers missing shifts last Sunday.

And now that staffing crisis will continue even well after the government opens.

Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport had the second-longest wait time, of 19 minutes. That's the only out, they say.

The FAA's response so far has been that, "Safety is the top priority..."
