Super moon, a total Lunar eclipse and bright planets

The 'Super Blood Wolf Moon' will be visible over Orlando this weekend

The next total lunar eclipse that's positioned over North America won't be until May of 2022.

The information was contained in a statement issued to NAN by Dr Felix Alle, the Head, Media and Public Communications of the agency in Abuja.

What's more is that this particular lunar eclipse is of the blood moon variant, i.e. the Moon will turn red during the lunar eclipse.

With the "blood moon" part of the eclipse, Brian Murphy, director of Indiana's Holcomb Observatory & Planetarium and Butler University professor said although the moon is in Earth's shadow, some sunlight still reaches the moon. Sunday's eclipse will nearly coincide with that perigee, meaning that the moon won't just be redder than usual, it will also look a tiny bit wider.

As for full-moon supermoons, this will be the first of three this year.

It will be easy to watch the eclipse, since the moon will be high in the sky, said Don Ficken, a member of the St. Louis Astronomical Society.

"If you only start looking during totality, and the eclipse is a dark one, you may not immediately be able to see the moon, especially if you are viewing from a town or city", a spokesperson said. That light can also change based on dust, pollutants or other particles in Earth's atmosphere.

Stargazers will be in for a treat on Sunday night, when the total lunar eclipse and super moon will light up the sky over Metro Vancouver. As the Moon is so close to Earth, it appears larger in the sky than usual. The next extreme supermoon, when the moon is as close to the Earth as it can be, will be January 21, 2023. (Not that it isn't super already - we love our only natural satellite.) This recently popular but decades-old term is used to describe a full or new moon that is closest to Earth in its orbit, which is the shape of an ellipse, just like Earth's orbit is an ellipse around the sun. The wolf moon is a cultural reference to the full moon in January. Eastern Standard Time, or shortly past 7:30 p.m. And if you can wait another two years after that, there's a North American total solar eclipse to look forward to in 2024.

The final label, "wolf", references the time of year for the moon, according to Brothers.

A partial eclipse will also be visible in lead up to the total eclipse and after it is completed.

The rise of a full moon is one of the most underappreciated natural sights of all. She says this event is significant because there have only been three super wolf blood moons in the past century. The name can be traced to earlier times when wolves would gather to howl at the moon during an unusual event. Also called the Storm Moon and Hunger Moon because of it being at the coldest time of year, the Super Snow Moon may be a good time to get used to going out at dusk.
