Huawei accused of stealing from U.S. partners

Canada detained Ren's daughter, Meng Wanzhou, who is Huawei's chief financial officer, in December at the request of USA authorities investigating an alleged scheme to use the global banking system to evade US sanctions against Iran.

Huawei fought against the allegations from T-Mobile, saying that nothing was stolen from T-Mobile as videos of Tappy can be easily found on YouTube.

The Handelsblatt daily reported earlier that the German government was actively considering stricter security requirements and other ways to exclude Huawei from the buildout of 5G mobile networks. The criminal investigation now underway is, at least in part, related to the previous T-Mobile allegations, the sources said. According to a Wall Street Journal report, the DOJ is close to filing an indictment against Huawei for theft of trade secrets, including the technology used in a robot developed by T-Mobile to test smartphones. Instead of doing so, ZTE not only failed to reprimand those involved, but continued to pay them full bonuses, lying to USA authorities about its actions.

The company is also mired in a US criminal case alleging that CFO Meng conspired to defraud banks into unwittingly clearing transactions linked to Iran in violation of USA sanctions. ZTE Corp was projected to go under if it were not for President Donald Trump lifting the ban to facilitate further negotiations in the trade war.

At that time, Washington had announced an indictment against Chinese chipmaker Fujian Jinhua Integrated Circuit Co Ltd for stealing trade secrets from US semiconductor company Micron Technology relating to research and development of memory storage devices.

The case of Meng, under house arrest awaiting proceedings, has inflamed US-China and Canada-China relations.

"Moving forward, we must combat China's theft of advanced USA technology and their brazen violation of USA law", Van Hollen added.

If Chinese telecommunications companies like Huawei violate United States regulations, they should be sanctioned.

But SaskTel, which first entered into contracts with the company in 2010 with a $27.9-million deal, said Tuesday it has found "no findings" of anything malicious related to Huawei and that it is not in favour of ending its relationship with the company, citing the cost of doing so.

Regardless of what actions have or have not now been taken, governments around the world appear to be increasingly hesitant to cooperate with Chinese corporations.

Huawei and the Department of Justice declined to comment.

In Washington, a bipartisan group of lawmakers introduced bills on Wednesday that would ban the sale of USA chips or other components to Huawei, ZTE Corp or other Chinese telecommunications companies that violate US sanctions or export control laws.

Huawei founder Ren Zhengfei, in a rare public appearance this week, said his company had never received a request from a government to transmit information in violation of any regulations. USA lawmakers have also banded together to ban chip sales to Huawei, ZTE, and other mainland companies to over sanctions violations.
