You Tube Bans Dangerous Pranks And Challenges

YouTube policy also bans pranks that cause children trauma, for example the fake death of a parent or severe abandonment, according to the firm.

YouTube was criticised earlier this month after another risky challenge sprung up which saw people recreating scenes from the Netflix film Bird Box.

YouTube has told users not to upload clips showing risky or emotionally distressing "pranks" after a series of videos inspired by 2018 film Bird Box were shared on the platform.

"We need to make sure what's amusing doesn't cross the line into also being harmful or risky".

"That said, we've always had policies to make sure what's amusing doesn't cross the line into also being harmful or risky".

But the clarifications "make it clear that challenges like the Tide pod challenge or the Fire challenge, that can cause death and/or have caused death in some instances, have no place on YouTube", the company said in a blog post.

There were no serious injuries in the crash in Utah.

"Our Community Guidelines prohibit content that encourages risky activities that are likely to result in serious harm, and today clarifying what this means for unsafe challenges and pranks", the company said in a statement in the Frequently Asked Questions - FAQ - section of their website.

Also banned are pranks which make victims believe they're in serious danger - i.e. a home invasion prank or a drive-by shooting prank - or ones that cause children to experience emotional distress.

The move comes after thousands of users posted videos of themselves trying the "Bird Box challenge" - performing various tasks while blindfolded. Some people suffered severe burns as a result of the challenge.

In particular, the Bird Box challenge has been dominating headlines since just after the film (for which it is named) debuted on Netflix a few weeks back. A 17-year-old girl is believed to have died in a vehicle accident while participating in the challenge, police say. The Tide Pod challenge previous year sparked a government watchdog to express concern over the prank, which involves teenagers putting Tide detergent pods in their mouths. For the next two months, there is a grace period where videos in violation of the policy will be removed, but uploaders won't receive a strike against them.
