FBI investigated Trump's Russian Federation ties after Comey firing

Pompeo, a former Central Intelligence Agency director, was one of a number of Trump administration officials to blast the revelations contained in the Times' report.

Today, more than 30 months after Mr. Strzok opened the probe, there is no public evidence of President Trump colluding with Moscow.

White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders called the Times' report "absurd" and said Mr Comey was sacked for being "a disgraced partisan hack".

"Unlike President Obama, who let Russian Federation and other foreign adversaries push America around, President Trump has actually been tough on Russian Federation".

The FBI had opened an inquiry in May 2017 into whether Donald Trump was working on behalf of Russian Federation, according to the the New York Times.

"He's [Strzok's] making an analogy here so my suggestion is, let's not, you know, throw the baby out with the bath water, let's sort of be a little bit more cautious with respect to our investigative steps because if he's not President, this plays a less of a threat to our national security".

But the association of some of his aides with Russian interests and his own surprisingly-friendly behavior towards Russian President Vladimir Putin during the 2016 campaign, even as it became clear that Russia was launching an attack on the core exercise of American democracy, raised alarms in the USA intelligence community.

The ex-FBI director told a congressional hearing that Mr Trump told him "I expect loyalty", and pressured him to end an inquiry into the president's former national security adviser, Michael Flynn.

A handout photo made available by the Russian Foreign Ministry on May 10, 2017 shows US President Donald J. Trump (C) speaking with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov (L) and Russian Ambassador to the US Sergei Kislyak during a meeting at the White House in Washington, DC.

What happened to the inquiry?

The investigation was quickly handed over to special counsel Robert Mueller, who continues to lead a probe into alleged Russian meddling in the 2016 election and collusion with Trump's presidential campaign.

He went on to say that the firing of Comey was a "great day for America" and called him a "Crooked Cop".

"The investigation the F.B.I. opened into Mr. Trump also had a criminal aspect, which has always been publicly known: whether his firing of Mr. Comey constituted obstruction of justice".

Nonetheless, the inquiry has put some of the president's closest associates in the dock.

The lawyer, Michael Cohen, has been sentenced to three years in prison for multiple crimes, including felony violations of campaign finance laws that prosecutors allege were carried out under Trump's direction.

The Times says it is unclear whether Mr Mueller is still pursuing the counterintelligence angle.

The newspaper, citing unnamed former law enforcement officials and others, reported January 11 that the counterintelligence investigation was initially separate from an ongoing criminal investigation.
