Man City boss Guardiola: De Bruyne was incredible

Diaz's departure did not come as a disappointment to Guardiola, who claims City did all they could to persuade the player to stay.

Brahim would have expected to start Wednesday night's clash with League One Burton having played in the three previous rounds, scoring both goals in the 2-0 win over Fulham.

'All my times in my career as a manager, I've never put a trick like that.

"They don't compete really and that's why sometimes it's hard to put them [in the team]... that's why they train with us, sometimes they play in the cup, sometimes go on loan, to see how they develop in that position".

"And after, I have said many times, their families, agents, they decide what is the best for the guy".

When asked if he was disappointed that Diaz had left the club for Madrid, Guardiola said he was not - he then added: "I wish him all the best".

Sources told ESPN FC that Brahim was frustrated by a lack of first-team opportunities but Guardiola said young players must be patient at leading clubs.

While that looked ominous for League One Burton, who are at the Etihad on Tuesday for the first leg of their Carabao Cup semi-final, the Brewers showed they could see the amusing side in a post that appeared on their official Twitter account on Monday.

'I don't want players who don't want to be here. "If you want to stay it's because you want to stay".

De Bruyne was a key player in the side that won the title last term, but injuries have restricted him to six league appearances resulting in City being nine points worse off than they were at the same stage last season.

"Playing against the best players in the world is what you dream about as a kid and we are all buzzing as we have nothing to lose and can just go out and enjoy it". "I speak [about this] many times, on the pitch it speaks for itself". "I trust the groundsman, I never made a phone call to say do this to damage our opponents".

City left back Benjamin Mendy is ready to return from a knee injury before the end of the month, while City are in discussions over a new contract with centre half Vincent Kompany.
