Pep Guardiola: Beating Liverpool means title race 'tight again'

Roberto Firmino looked to have sealed a potentially vital point for leaders Liverpool in the title race when he equalised just past the hour, but Sane struck soon after, confirming the Reds' first league defeat of the season in their 21st game and moving City to second and within four points of the summit.

Sergio Aguero fired Man City into the lead from a ridiculous angle but that was after Liverpool were 11mm away from taking the lead, after a mix-up between John Stones and Ederson.

The Premier League's two-week holiday slate concludes with the biggest match of them all. Fans of rival clubs have accused (albeit mocked) Jurgen Klopp for his inability to win a silverware despite the "countless hugs given to his players and his wild punches in the air when celebrating goals or victories" since his move from Borussia Dortmund to Liverpool.

Alisson did well again to stop a close-range blast from Bernardo Silva in the final minute of normal time before Liverpool laid siege to City's goal and Stones again had to clear off the line.

Such form came as a surprise and, incredibly, raised questions about the depth of Manchester City's squad - with particular attention on Guardiola's inability to replace the injured Fernandinho.

Injuries to key personnel is one major factor, with Benjamin Mendy missed at left-back and his replacement, Fabian Delph, missing due to suspension.

Dejan Lovren set the tone with a heavy challenge on Aguero early on and Vincent Kompany was perhaps lucky to stay on the pitch after a unsafe first-half lunge on Mohamed Salah.

The forward sparked panic in the hosts' defense after his shot rebounded off the post and nearly crept back in after hitting City goalkeeper Ederson.

Meanwhile, Christmas had been kind to Liverpool. He's clean, he's clever, he fought against Van Dijk.

Nonsense. And this was a night that proved City, whether they eventually win the title or not, have the mettle of champions. Even though Liverpool's lead atop the table was cut to four, Klopp and Co. still controls their own destiny.

Liverpool had the wood over City last season. Liverpool boasts of the best record against the Premier League's top five sides.
