Nancy Pelosi: The remarkable comeback of America’s most powerful woman

US President Donald Trump appeared in his first White House press briefing of 2019 on Thursday to congratulate Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) on taking over the role of speaker of the US House of Representatives as a new US Congress came into session. "The Democrats know they can't win based on all of the achievements of 'Trump, ' so they are going all out on the desperately needed Wall and Border Security - and Presidential Harassment".

President Donald Trump says he remains "ready and willing" to work with Democrats to pass a government spending bill even as he refuses to budge over funding for his long-promised border wall. Democrats rejected the demand and parts of the federal government have been shut since December 22 because of lack of funding as a result.

California Congresswoman Nancy Pelosi was elected Speaker of the House 220-192, making her third in line to the presidency.

But Democratic leaders on Capitol Hill have previously supported $1.3 billion for border security, an amount far less than the $5 billion the president has insisted on, and Democrats have refused to accede to Trump's demand for funding specifically for building a border wall. He was among 15 House Democrats who defected, 10 of those being newcomers. But he was acquitted in the Senate, as no Democrat voted to convict - a scenario, some observers say, that would be likely to repeat in a Republican Senate should Trump be impeached.

"It was a civil discussion, and we are hopeful that somehow, in the coming days and weeks, we will be able to reach an agreement", he said.

After a White House meeting on Sunday, Republican Senator Lindsey Graham said Trump was receptive to Graham's idea of a deal that might provide work permits to Dreamer immigrants in exchange for money for physical border barriers.

"We shouldn't be impeaching for a political reason, and we shouldn't avoid impeachment for a political reason", she said, adding that she would wait for the findings of special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation into Russian Federation meddling in the 2016 election.

"We're asking the president to open up government", Ms Pelosi said "We have given the Republicans a chance to take yes for an answer".

"Could be a long time, or it could be quickly".

"This is the Trump shutdown, through and through". There are more women than ever before, and a new generation of Muslims, Latinos, Native Americans and African-Americans in the House is creating what academics call a reflective democracy, more aligned with the population of the United States.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell dismissed one possible bipartisan compromise after the meeting, saying the Senate will not take up House Democrats' package of spending bills to reopen the government through February 8 because Trump will not sign it.

As the shutdown approaches the end of a second week, 800,000 federal employees have been impacted, including 420,000 employees deemed "essential" who are working without pay.

"It would be the height of irresponsibility and political cynicism for Senate Republicans to now reject the same legislation they have already supported", the Democratic leaders said. A White House official, one of two people who described that exchange only on condition of anonymity, said the president had been trying to explain that it would be foolish not to pay for border security.

"Democrats have been committed to protecting our borders".
