McIver was arrested after Michael Kovrig and Michael Spavor, two Canadians detained in China on charges that they're a threat to national security.

The court ordered that Robert Lloyd Schellenberg be retried in the city of Dalian, where he was originally tried and sentenced.

At the appeal hearing, prosecutors argued Schellenberg was likely to part of a worldwide drugs smuggling operation.

"Due to the provisions under the Privacy Act, no further information can be disclosed".

Since her arrest, multiple Canadian citizens have been detained in China, even as both governments refused to link the cases.

McIver's detention followed the arrests of two other Canadians on allegations they were harming China's national security.

China's foreign ministry said earlier this month that McIver had been undergoing "administrative punishment" for working illegally.

The relevant governmental departments confirmed with Global Times Schellenberg's identity as a Canadian citizen.

Kovrig is a Canadian diplomat on leave from the foreign service to work with the anti-war International Crisis Group, travelling through China as a researcher and analyst.

A Dalian government news portal said last week that Schellenberg had smuggled "an enormous amount of drugs" into China.

China exercises a zero-tolerance policy towards drug trafficking, and has handed death sentences to foreigners found guilty of smuggling large quantities of illicit drugs.

Though no link has been officially made, the arrests seem to be in retaliation to Canada's December 1 arrest of Meng Wanzhou, a top executive at Chinese telecommunications giant Huawei She was detained on a request from the United States, which has accused her of violating sanctions of Iran.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has confirmed that McIver's case does not appear to be linked to that of the other two detainees.

Meng was arrested at the request of U.S. prosecutors and faces extradition on charges of violating sanctions on Iran.

The Globe and Mail reported that Mclver had assured her family in mid-December that she was fine and would be deported from China within days.
