For now though, the Cavaliers (8-5) will have to settle for savoring a 28-0 victory over SC in the Belk Bowl, a win that snapped the longest bowl drought in the ACC.

It was Coach Bronco Mendenhall's first win in a bowl game, and the Cavaliers' first win in a bowl game since 2005.

"It wasn't just going, it was winning", Mendenhall said.

Virginia has had historical success in this bowl game. MI and Florida have played way too many times in recent years, so this game - a matchup of the SEC's third-best pass offense and the ACC's second-best pass defense - will be a nice alternative before the Cotton Bowl later that afternoon. This was their first time back in Charlotte since, and the result was the same. The Cavaliers beat three bowl teams in Miami, N.C. State and Ohio.

The Orange ended with a flourish, too: Down 18-17 going into the final quarter, they scored 17 points in the first 5:01 of the fourth.

Vann (5'10/185) has been rotating outside during his freshman season, but there will be more snaps and targets to go around with wide receiver Deebo Samuel skipping the game to focus on the 2019 NFL Draft.

Apparently it didn't matter to the SC administration that Muschamp was sacked from Florida after going 10-13 over his last two years in Gainesville. Perkins hit Zaccheaus for a 10-yard touchdown reception.

SC football senior defensive back Rashad Fenton was called for pass interference midway through the second quarter of the Belk Bowl on Sunday against Virginia. The third score went to Hasise Dubois who beat his man on a slant route from 29-yards out.

SC went nowhere fast and a sack of Bentley forced the Gamecocks to punt.

The Gamecocks' junior quarterback, Jake Bentley, struggled in the first half. Virginia had 28 first downs compared to just 12 for SC. Samuel had 62 catches for 882 yards and 11 touchdowns.

Virginia's defense dominated the first half, holding SC to just 160 total yards on five drives, including turning in a big fourth-and-1 stop at the U.Va. 42-yard line to end the Gamecocks' first possession. They won by kicking a field goal in overtime and forcing Perkins, hobbled by an ankle injury, to fumble the ball away.

The Gamecocks turned the ball over on their first drive of the game after failing to convert on fourth down and one yard to go.

UVA jumped out to an early 7-0 lead when Bryce Perkins connected with Olamide Zaccheaus on a six-yard toss. Their 32 passing touchdowns were second most in the league.

However, the Gamecocks would give it right back when senior strong safety Juan Thornhill picked off Bentley and returned it 54 yards to the SC 21-yard-line on his sixth interception of the season.

"This was a huge leap for our program", Perkins said. SC has forced 15 turnovers on the season and come into this matchup with a turnover margin of -4.

Teams have only been able to muster 21.8 points and 337.2 yards per game against UVA's stout defense.

It was Thornhill's team-leading sixth interception of the season.
