NY awe-struck as sky over Queens turns blue

A transformer explosion at a power plant in Queens temporarily lit the sky bright blue on Dec. 27 2018 in New York

In this image taken from video, the night sky is illuminated in a bright, blue color after an explosion in the Queens borough of New York, Dec. 27, 2018.

One resident, Joe Calderone, told the New York Post: "Damn, I thought a UFO hit Con Ed".

As the official word about the transformer explosion that caused the bright blue lights started to circulate out, it didn't stop Twitter from having some fun about what the "real" cause was.

The New York Police Department's 114th precinct, which patrols the area, said in a Twitter post that people should avoid the area around the power plant. InsideEdition.com's Lisa Voyticki reports.

Con Edison also headed to Twitter to explain there had been an electrical fire at their Astoria substation, involving some of the electrical transformers.

The freaky sight set off a frenzy on social media, where people reported a power failure at LaGuardia Airport.

In the end, the explanation turned out to be somewhat more mundane: a problem at a local power plant.

Planes were temporarily grounded, while inbound flights were impacted from the outage. "The fire is under control, will update as more info becomes available", the New York Police Department tweeted.

Con Edison said the airport switched to a backup generator during the transmission disturbance, and all power lines serving the area are in service and the system is stable. Authorities said the fire was under control.

Mayor Bill de Blasio's spokesman Eric Phillips tweeted that the lights were attributable to a "blown transformer".

It's not everyday that the night sky is lit up with pulsing blue light, so naturally, the internet had a field day with this event.

Around 11 p.m., the airport tweeted power was restored in the temrinals with outgoing and incoming flights resuming.

Karol Markowicz said: 'Wtf if this insane bright blue light over Brooklyn?!?'
