Thailand Legalizes Medical Marijuana in a "New Year’s Gift" to the People

While Thailand's interim parliament voted to approve weed its recreational use remains illegal in the country.

A Thai activist with a marijuana tattoo on his face gathers with others during a campaign for the legalisation of medical marijuana near Government House in Bangkok, Thailand, Nov 20, 2018.

"This is a New Year's gift from the National Legislative Assembly to the government and the Thai people", said Somchai Sawangkarn during a televised parliamentary session.

166 members of the assembly voted in favour of the amendment and 13 members restrained from voting. The decision to legalize these two products is under consideration in a neighboring country Malaysia, whereas New Zealand's government had passed a law earlier this month to liberalize the medicinal use of cannabis, which was restricted before.

His case sparked public outrage and a petition to free Lukman was signed by more than 70,000 people including ministers and the ruling coalition.

Thai farmers welcomed a new law allowing cultivation and use of marijuana for medical purposes Wednesday, in an Asian first that promises an economic bonanza but also fears that foreign companies could reap the rewards. The country will take steps to make sure that medical marijuana is strictly controlled to ensure that it will only be used for medicinal purposes.

In an apparent response to news of Thailand's impending medical marijuana vote, Singapore's government issued a stern warning earlier this year that it would duly punish any citizen or permanent resident found to have consumed marijuana overseas.

Across the world, countries have been revisiting their marijuana laws.

Elsewhere in Europe, medications derived from cannabis became legal in Germany past year. In the Unites States, medical marijuana is legal in 30 states, though the laws governing what's permitted vary from state to state. Or does each need its own Muhammad Lukman?
