Both were taken to a medical centre in New Mexico's Alamogordo, where the child was diagnosed with a common cold and fever and released. It added that the agency will be conducting a review of the incident and the Department of Homeland Security Office of the inspector general has been notified.

A CBP spokesman declined to elaborate Tuesday, but said details will be released shortly.

The boy's death followed the death in early December of 7-year-old Jakelin Caal, also from Guatemala.

Caal's wake was held on Monday, Christmas Eve, in her family's village.

The boy's death is the second death of a child in CBP care this month. The girl began vomiting during a bus transfer to Lordsburg Border Patrol Station.

Maquin and her father were taken to the Antelope Wells port of entry after turning themselves in to CBP officers in early December. He was readmitted to the hospital and died there hours later.

The statement says CBP needs the help of other government agencies to care for children it is detaining.

Amnesty International USA Executive Director Margaret Huang said the administration's "policies of cruelty toward migrants and asylum-seekers at the border must cease immediately before any more children are harmed".

Felipe González Morales, the United Nations special rapporteur on the human rights of migrants, said Monday that American authorities "must ensure that an in-depth, independent investigation" is conducted.

President Donald Trump has made hardline immigration policies a central plank of his presidency, drawing fire from critics who accuse him of demonizing migrants for political gain.

It is the second time this month an immigrant child has died while being detained after crossing the US-Mexico border.

But the Trump administration said Caal's death showed the danger of her journey and the family's decision to cross the border illegally. While in the hospital, the girl was revived after going into cardiac arrest but she died less than 24 hours later.

On Tuesday, Rep. Castro offered his condolences to the boy's family and called for a congressional investigation of the death.

Xochitl Torres Small, a Democrat who will represent the district starting in January, called for a thorough and transparent investigation into the children's deaths and more medical resources along the border.
