No end in sight to Trump’s shutdown as first business day looms

Should Trump Be Impeached Over Santa Outrage

Fielding a phone call from a seven-year-old on Monday, US President Donald Trump put himself on Santa Claus's naughty list by raising doubts about his existence.

Trump would have this information to hand, you see, as he was working with the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD), marking their 63rd straight year of tracking Santa's sleigh on its global rounds.

US President Donald Trump speaks on the telephone as he answers calls from people calling into the Norad Santa tracker phone line at the White House in Washington, DC.

Sadly, we do not know how the 7-year-old, named Coleman, responded to the president's suggestion that his parents had been lying to him all his life and that he would probably get wise to it soon.

"Yes, sir", replied Collman - explaining later that she didn't know what the word "marginal" meant.

Mr. Trump listened again and chuckled before saying, "Well, you just enjoy yourself".

What Mr Trump said to Collman made headlines as he was blamed for ruining Christmas for her and children around the world. Only Mr Trump's end of the conversation could be heard by reporters, but Collman's family later posted video of the call on YouTube.

The meeting on Monday didn't result in a deal, the Associated Press reported, the government shutdown continuing through Christmas Eve over the president's budget demands for a wall along the US-Mexico border.

And on Christmas Day, as usual, the food was gone and there were presents under the tree.

President Donald Trump on Tuesday wished USA troops stationed around the country and the globe a merry Christmas.

So far, the public and federal workers have largely been spared inconvenience and hardship because government is closed on weekends and federal employees were excused from work on Christmas Eve and Christmas, a federal holiday.

Trump claimed that many of these workers "have said to me and communicated, 'stay out until you get the funding for the wall.' These federal workers want the wall".

But he scrapped plans to head to Florida for the holidays after parts of the government were forced to shut down indefinitely in a stalemate with Congress.

"What do people say about me?" He didn't mention which family members were at the Mar-a-Lago estate.
