Google Shuts Down ''Censored'' Chinese Search Project

Google's Secret China Project “Effectively Ended” After Internal Confrontation

Google's Secret China Project “Effectively Ended” After Internal Confrontation

The report explains that Google was utilising a Chinese website called "265.com" to collect data from the people of Beijing in order to build its library of censored information.

This search engine was supposed to connect the phone numbers of users with their search histories, making it the Chinese censorship would have been Easy to find the users.

Another source of internal pressure has come from the Privacy and Security teams.

Therefore the search results would have omitted information related to democracy, human rights, peaceful protest, or anything that "threatens" the Communist Party government of China.

Sundar Pichai was recently grilled by the United States Congress, and on the point of whether or not Google would be launching a service in China Pichai stated that the company does not have any plans to launch in the country.

This is a significant blow to Pichai.

Besides bringing existing apps to China, Google has also embraced local platforms. This is due to China's censorship policies, which forced Google to leave China in 2010, completely. The company itself has not officially confirmed the development of such a search engine for China. But it appears that won't be happening. For a time, the site had operated as normal as a bulletin board of news items and general interests along with a web search function that routed queries to domestic giant Baidu. Google really wants to get into China because, well it is the largest country on earth right now with over 1.4 billion people. "It's hard to imagine you could operate in the Chinese market under the current government framework and maintain a commitment to universal values, such as freedom of expression and personal privacy". Still, Googlers Against Dragonfly, an employee activist group, isn't celebrating the most recent news just yet. Google's motto has always been "don't be evil" and creating a censored search engine would be Google siding with the censorship laws in China, and "being evil", at least according to some. CEO Sundar Pichai placed the program high on his list of priorities - that's likely to change.

It also includes forbidding of linking to "dangerous" websites such as BBC.com, Wikipedia, and even Google's own YouTube. A department of crucial importance, the Google privacy team, was left out of Project Dragonfly's development - and when it discovered the truth, there was little room for reconciliation between the two parties. This allows Google to delay the project indefinitely without alienating China by officially canceling it. This team was kept in the dark about what the developer team was doing, and only found out after the media reported on it.
