Google to Invest More Than $1 Billion to Establish NYC Campus

Google plans to spend $1 billion to develop its Hudson Square campus, which will initially consist of three buildings: 550 Washington Street, 315 Hudson Street, and 345 Hudson Street.

Google plans to double the number of its employees in NY to around 14,000 over the next 10 years, Porat wrote on Monday.

Google's parent company Alphabet on Monday said it was investing more than $1 billion to set up a new campus in New York City. The news follows rumors that Google was looking to find space for up to 12,000 more employees in NY. The company also helped bring over 5,000 free Wi-Fi hotspots to the New York Public Library System. The company is building a new campus in the Hudson Square neighborhood, about a mile south of its current NY headquarters in the Chelsea neighborhood.

Google, based in Mountain View, California, will fashion a complex exceeding 1.7 million square feet along the Hudson River in the city's West Village neighbourhood, Ruth Porat, senior vice president and chief financial officer, said in a blog post.

The moves from Google and Apple came one month after Amazon announced the results of its much-anticipated search for a place to build its second headquarters.

The announcement comes after rival Amazon said last month that it was splitting its new headquarters between the Long Island City district in NY and Crystal City, a Virginia community across the Potomac River from the U.S. capital Washington.

The move is the latest high-profile expansion from a US tech giant, following big investments from Apple and Amazon to create new office spaces in New York, Washington, D.C., and Texas. Earlier this year, the company announced a $2.4 billion purchase of the Manhattan Chelsea Market.
