Sundar Pichai tells Congress Chinese search engine isn't coming soon

Speaking in front of the House Judiciary Committee, Pichai explained that the company doesn't "manually intervene" in search results, and instead search results are based on crawling the content of web pages.

Rishma is now pursuing a bachelor's degree in International Relations and has a special place in her life for sifting through all sorts of random trivia, thank you very much.

Democrats and Republicans also warned Google about building a search engine that would work with China's government-controlled internet.

Republican congresswoman Zoe Lofgren asked why pictures of the United States president came up when that specific term was searched.

It is likely that Google will come under increased pressure in the coming months and years to reorient its commitments, especially as US-China tensions intensify. In an Infowars stream of proceedings titled "Live at the Google Treason Hearings", Jones called Google "absolutely the most awful corporation on earth". Looming over the tech industry is the possibility of government regulation meant to protect people's data and a deeper look into whether big companies like Google, Amazon and Facebook need to be broken up. While Pichai didn't shed much light on how exactly Google's search engine works, he went to great lengths to assure lawmakers that Google's search results are not controlled by any human being but purely algorithm-driven. "There are a number of factors that can lead to slight differences, including time and location, which this study doesn't appear to have controlled for effectively", said a Google spokesperson.

Ms Lofgen cleared up: "So it's not some little man sitting behind the curtain figuring out what we're going to show the user?"

Yet Pichai's mild-mannered responses - often offering more nuance than lawmakers sought or promising to have his staff follow up later on tricky questions - did not always satisfy some Republicans.

"I know Google's attitude".

"I understand the frustration at seeing negative news, and I see it on me on Google", Pichai told the packed hearing.

Rep. Steve Chabot, R-Ohio, told Pichai that he had to scroll deep into search results to find any positive articles about President Donald Trump's signature tax cuts past year.

But Democrat Jerry Nadler called the bias issue a "fantasy" drummed up by conservatives and said "no evidence supports this right-wing conspiracy theory".
