Trump calls for Mueller probe to end following Manafort, Cohen court filings

The separate filings came from special counsel Robert Mueller and federal prosecutors in NY ahead of Wednesday's sentencing of Trump's former personal lawyer, Michael Cohen.

Attorneys from the Southern District of NY state explicitly in the court filing that Cohen "acted in coordination with and at the direction of Individual-1" in handling payments to two women who claimed to have an affair with Trump long before the election.

NY prosecutors, however, were far harsher in their assessment of Cohen's character, saying he should get only a modest reduction in an expected prison sentence of about five years.

Cohen, dubbed Trump's "legal fixer" in the past, also described his work in conjunction with Trump in orchestrating hush money payments to two women - a porn star and a Playboy model - who said they had sex with Trump a decade earlier.

On Saturday morning, Trump responded to the release of the documents on Twitter (in almost all caps, of course), saying, "AFTER TWO YEARS AND MILLIONS OF PAGES OF DOCUMENTS (and a cost of over $30,000,000), NO COLLUSION!"

Robert Mueller, the special counsel heading up the probe into Russian meddling in the 2016 vote, followed up with a separate filing saying Cohen had made "substantial and significant efforts to remediate his misconduct, accept responsibility for his actions, and assist" the special investigation, a thorn in Trump's side.

Yesterday, Mueller said Cohen's false statements to Congress had "obscured the fact" that the skyscraper project held the potential to reap "hundreds of millions of dollars from Russian sources" for the Trump Organization. His lawyers want the 52-year-old attorney to avoid prison time altogether. He also provided information about attempts by Russian nationals to reach Trump's campaign, they said. Prosecutors wrote that Cohen had implicated Trump in the arrangement of hush-money payments to women during the 2016 election.

"Totally clears the President".

One defendant, former national security adviser Michael Flynn, provided so much information to prosecutors that Mueller this week said he shouldn't serve any prison time.

Cohen, who has been cooperating with U.S. Special Counsel Robert Mueller's probe into possible collusion between Russian Federation and Trump's 2016 election campaign, pleaded guilty to the charges in August. But prosecutors say they recovered "electronic documents" showing contacts with multiple administration officials not identified in the filings.

"In particular, and as Cohen himself has now admitted, with respect to both payments, he acted in coordination with and at the direction of Individual-1", they added, referring to Trump.

The meeting didn't take place.

They said Cohen should receive some credit for cooperating with Mueller but noted he had not entered into a similar agreement with their office.

"While Cohen - as his own submission makes clear - already enjoyed a privileged life, his desire for even greater wealth and influence precipitated an extensive course of criminal conduct", they said.

Mueller said on Friday that Cohen repeated his false statements about the project in his first meeting with Mueller's office, admitting the truth only in a later meeting in September after he had pleaded guilty to the separate NY charges.
