Redsox Re-sign Playoff Hero Eovaldi 4-year, $67.5 million

He became a free agent after the World Series.

Eovaldi, 28, was acquired by Boston on July 25 in exchange for Jalen Beeks.

Nathan Eovaldi is staying with the Boston Red Sox, agreeing to a $68 million, four-year contract. He went on to the ALCS where he won Game 3 against the defending champion Houston Astros delivering a very good six-inning start and then he came in relief for Game 5 with four huge outs out in the series-clinching Game 5. He registered a 3-3 record with a 3.33 ERA in 12 regular-season appearances after the deal. The flamethrowing righty was particularly impressive with the Red Sox, for whom he pitched to a 3.33 ERA in 54 innings to close out the season before dazzling with a 1.61 ERA in 22 1/3 postseason frames. "Everybody's going to remember Nate Eovaldi", manager Alex Cora said.

"I felt privileged to be able to watch what Nathan Eovaldi did", Rick Porcello said. He missed the 2017 season while recovering from surgery and returned in 2018 with the Tampa Bay Rays, and also with a fastball that neared 100 miles per hour.

Heyman reported on Thursday that the Yankees' next target is pitcher J.A. Happ, who spent several months with the team a year ago after being acquired in a trade with the Blue Jays. His strikeouts-per-nine - 8.2 - was a career best. We all are! Price may have another reason to be celebrating Eovaldi's return though. Given Boston's uncertainty beyond the top three in the rotation - Eduardo Rodriguez, Steven Wright and Brian Johnson are among the options for the final two spots - it seems logical to expect that Eovaldi's high-octane arm would serve to deepen the starting staff.

The deal fills the 40-man roster and puts Boston at risk of exceeding the Competitive Balance Tax for the second straight year. He spent two seasons with the Yankees in 2015 and 2016.

Craig Kimbrel, Ian Kinsler, Drew Pomeranz, Joe Kelly and Brandon Phillips are Boston's remaining free agents.
