Trump to pick State Dept spokeswoman Heather Nauert as United Nations envoy

Trump's cabinet shake-up kicks into gear

Now, Haley, who was formerly the governor of SC, may have a replacement.

On a day of other staff shakeups, the president also said he'll have an announcement of a major change in his top military brass on Saturday when he attends the annual Army-Navy football game in Philadelphia.

Relatively new in the political scene, analysts have now pointed at her lack of political and policy credentials which Haley, a former SC governor, possesses.

Nauert, 48, is a former Fox News Channel correspondent and anchor. Although some have speculated that Haley may challenge Trump in the 2020 presidential election, Haley has said that she will support the president.

Nauert left Fox in April past year after being appointed as the State Department spokeswoman early in the tenure of then-Secretary of State Rex Tillerson. According to her State Department biography, she worked at ABC News prior to her time at Fox, and before that spent a term as a member of the Council on Foreign Relations.

But the Senate, which alone needs to confirm Nauert, is still under the control of Trump´s Republican Party.

It is not yet clear who would take over her role as State Department Spokesperson. She's remained somewhat controversy-free, her biggest criticism coming from a visit she took with Secretary of State Mike Pompeo to Saudi Arabi to investigate the killing of journalist Jamal Khashoggi.

There are also issues like: will Trump downgrade the UN Ambassador position to a Cabinet-level position that reports to Pompeo and what will be her stance on defending Israel?

"I think he will serve with great distinction", Mr. Trump told reporters. She will learn the brief.

A tough stance on North Korea remains one of the top agenda items for both the UN Ambassador and the Secretary of State.

Haley similarly had little foreign policy experience when appointed, although she had a national name as the governor of SC.

Nauert has laid relatively low in the administration. The job of United Nations ambassador is very different, he said, and usually requires foreign policy or diplomatic expertise or both.

"I worry that we will grow ever more isolated on this, the most important of world stages", he said.

As for Nauert, a former Fox News Channel host, Gingrich said she's a "very solid pick" for United Nations ambassador. She hadn't specialized in foreign policy or global relations. It was filled temporarily at one point by Trump's current national security adviser John Bolton. "Ambassador Haley was a far more high-level figure, particularly early in the administration".
