He noted that trains were the mode of transportation that first carried Bush to his service as a naval aviator in World War II and back home again.

George W. Bush announced that Sully is heading to his next assignment: Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Maryland.

Former President George H.W. Bush first introduced his new companion to the world via Twitter, sharing a photo and writing: "A great joy to welcome home the newest member of our family, 'Sully, ' a handsome - and beautifully trained - lab from @AmericasVetDogs".

"We introduced Sully to all the different pet dogs there on the compound, and all the family met the dog".

Bush will lie in state there for public visitation through Wednesday.

"George H.W. Bush was America's last great soldier-statesman", presidential biographer Jon Meacham said in a eulogy.

Former Senate Majority Leader Bob Dole was helped out of his wheelchair Tuesday afternoon to salute the American flag-draped casket of former President George H.W. Bush.




Although Bush's funeral services are suffused with the flourishes accorded presidents, by his choice they will not include a formal funeral procession through downtown Washington.

Sully, named after the pilot who landed a plane in the Hudson River in 2009, Chesley "Sully" Sullenberger, became Bush's service dog this summer, after former first lady Barbara Bush passed away.

"He taught us public service was noble and necessary", his son and the 43rd president, George W. Bush, told the invited guests at Washington National Cathedral.

The Oak Ridge Boys will perform "Amazing Grace" and Reba McEntire will sing "The Lord's Prayer" at Thursday's services at Houston's St. Martin's Episcopal Church.

The federal government and some financial exchanges will be closed on Wednesday for a day of mourning.

Trump has often aimed political taunts at the Bush family, long a symbol of the traditional, more moderate wing of the U.S. Republican party that often is at odds with Trump's populist supporters. His death also reduces membership in the ex-presidents' club to four: Jimmy Carter, Bill Clinton, George W. Bush and Barack Obama.

The U.S. District Court for New Mexico will be closed, but some court cases that have already begun will continue.
