Ask Farrell: Will Urban Meyer return to coaching at some point?

Why Ryan Day was Ohio State’s choice to succeed Urban Meyer and the challenges that await

Coach Meyer will be announcing his retirement at an afternoon press conference, and coach Ryan Day will be introduced as head coach.

When Ohio State football coach Urban Meyer announced he was retiring Tuesday, the college football world reacted not with warm goodbyes and glowing tributes but with cynical comments and skeptical columns.

This had been talked about since the beginning of the season, in the wake of Meyer's 3-game suspension and the recent diagnosis of the worsening of a cyst on Meyer's brain that causes painful headaches.

Late last month, it was reported that Urban Meyer would address his coaching future following the Big Ten championship game. Meyer said his decision had to come before the December 19 signing day.

Smith was in a similar situation to the one OSU's players are in now when he was in college and his coach, a legend who'd had incredible success at a legendary football program, retired at a young age. Prior to becoming a head coach, Meyer served as an assistant at Notre Dame (1996-2000), Colorado State (1990-95), Illinois State (1988-89) and Ohio State (1986-87), where he learned under mentor Earl Bruce. But Meyer spun them around and gave them eight wins during his first season and another nine wins the following season.

This year's defense was the worst unit Ohio State has fielded during Meyer's tenure as coach in Columbus.

Meyer, who is 54, previously stepped away to deal with his health at Florida, only to return.

Meyer picked Florida because the Gators were better positioned to win national championships. The Buckeyes missed out on a title game appearance in 2013 when they lost to Michigan State in the Big Ten Championship Game, but they did take home the crown in 2014 in the first year of the College Football Playoff. (Television images from Buckeyes games this season often showed Meyer doubled over, seemingly in pain.) Both Thamel and Lesmerises say Meyer's health was a factor in his decision to step down. I think his ego took such a hit and his arrogance is so vast that he made the decision to leave right after the suspension. He was also the first to post three 13-win seasons in a four-year span and win two BCS titles.

His time at Ohio State wasn't without controversy.

Here's what a top five list of winningest active coaches now looks like without Meyer and Snyder on it.

First, if Meyer does come back, it's going to have to be a ideal fit with the potential for him to turn it into a national title contender.

Florida State - Willie Taggart just finished his first season at Florida State and it resulted in the Seminoles 36-year bowl streak being snapped.

It appeared to be a dream job for the Toledo native.

"I thought he was very good in the classroom, teaching me the offense and the system, breaking it down and making it very simplistic where I would be able to understand it and translate it to the field", Murphy said. Meyer has about $38 million left on his contract.
