- UGA's loss to Alabama in the Southeastern Conference championship has cost the Dawgs dearly.

With everything going to chalk, one spot opens up in the top four of the College Football Playoff Top 25 after Alabama's come-from-behind victory over Georgia in the SEC championship game.

"Every combination was vetted, looking at their full body of work, their resumes side-by-side", selection committee chairman Rob Mullens said.

That protocol, which he recited nearly word-for-word, says that when teams are that close, certain factors should take precedence, the most notable of those being "conference champions".

The sports network said Georgia had the best strength of schedule of the three and Ohio State had the best strength of record, a statistic that measures how strong a team's record is given its schedule.

The Sooners closed out their season with a 39-27 season over Texas, the only team that beat them during the regular season, in the Big 12 Championship. Oklahoma is making its third appearance in the five-year-old playoff.

The Fighting Irish had their spot booked in the playoff a week before the other teams given they didn't play in a conference title game.

This will be only the fourth meeting between Clemson and Notre Dame, the first in a bowl game.

Quarterback Ian Book proved to be the game-changer for Notre Dame's offense this season with 2,468 passing yards, 19 touchdowns, six interceptions and a 162.5 passer rating.

The Sooners beat out Georgia for the fourth and final playoff berth.

The wild card was Georgia beating the mighty Tide, which could have meant two SEC teams for the second straight season.

The committee didn't buy it.
