Madrid to host Copa Libertadores final

Argentina's biggest match will be played in Madrid.

Anyone holding shares in the expression "clear as mud" will have enjoyed the last couple of weeks in South American football, but we do now finally have a date and a destination for the second leg of the Copa Libertadores final: December 9, Madrid. Visiting fans were prohibited from attending the two-legged final when it was staged in Argentina.

Originally scheduled for last weekend at River's Monumental stadium in Buenos Aires, it was postponed after some Boca players were injured when their team bus came under attack from their arch rivals' fans throwing projectiles.

They will now be forced to play two games behind closed doors.

Ordered to pay a fine of $400,000, the fans of River will also will be punished for their role in the whole fiasco.

The choice of the Bernabeu means that both the Copa Libertadores and Champions League finals will be played in Madrid within six months of each other. The Bernabeu is open that weekend, as Real Madrid will be playing at Huesca on December 9.

"Spain is ready to organise the final of the Copa Libertadores between Boca Juniors and River Plate", tweeted Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez.

South America's football confederation (CONMEBOL) announced on Thursday that the match between River Plate and Boca Juniors would take place in the Spanish capital on Sunday Dec. 9.

But, while Boca want to be awarded the trophy after their bus was attacked on the way to the second leg, River are also appealing CONMEBOL's decision. The Copa Libertadores victor is South America's entrant in the FIFA Club World Cup, which kicks off December 12 in the United Arab Emirates.

The first leg ended in a 2-2 draw. That match, too, was delayed by a day, with weather conditions decimating the field conditions and forcing the match to be postponed.
