Hearty handshake between Putin and Saudi crown prince goes viral

Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and Russian President Vladimir Putin were caught high fiving at the G20 summit in Argentina

All eyes are on Argentina as the most powerful heads of state descend on Buenos Aires for the G20 summit, and Russian President Vladimir Putin and Saudi Crown Prince Mohammad Bin Salman certainly put on a show.

As worldwide pressure builds on Saudi Arabia over the brutal murder of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi in its consulate in Istanbul early last month, the costs for Riyadh continue to rise.

However, some of the most interesting interactions are happening on the summit's sidelines, amid stand-offs over the US-China trade row, Russia's conflict with Ukraine and Saudi Arabia's involvement in the murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi.

The G20 summit in Buenos Aires will be the first major worldwide event Prince Mohammed has attended since Mr Khashoggi's murder.

According to a Guardian analysis of their only partly audible conversation, Macron replies to the crown prince's assurances: "I do worry".

US President Donald Trump and his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping are scheduled to have dinner together on Saturday. Human Rights Watch, however, has accused him of responsibility and also of war crimes in Yemen, and on Wednesday, Argentine legal authorities took initial action to consider a request to prosecute him for alleged crimes against humanity - a move apparently aimed at embarrassing him as he attends the summit.

At the end, Mr Macron is heard threateningly telling MBS: "I am a man of my word". "You never listen to me". Thank you." Macron: "I don't want.

As the leaders arrived at the summit, Putin and MBS, as he is known, were seen smiling and enthusiastically shaking one another's hands.

Russian President Vladimir Putin and bin Salman shared a chummy, enthusiastic greeting, beaming widely and clasping hands in something of a cross between a handshake and a high-five.

Trump has had no discussion yet with the crown prince but would not rule one out.

Trump canceled his meeting with Putin on Thursday, citing clashes with Russian and Ukrainian military vessels.

A white house source commented on the exchange of greetings between the two leaders as saying: "as he (Trump) did with almost every leader in attendance".

Trump chatted with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and the leaders of Japan and France during the group photo session at the G-20 summit.
