Trump Rips Robert Mueller As 'Prosecutor Gone Rogue' After Paul Manafort Complaint

Ex-Trump aide Manafort violated plea deal by lying Prosecutors

After the guilty plea, Manafort met regularly with prosecutors, sparking speculation about what he might be sharing.

Reacting to reports that Paul Manafort had lied to the Federal Bureau of Investigation, breaking his plea deal with Special Counsel Robert Mueller, CNN's Anderson Cooper wondered, "How friggin' stupid is this guy?!" The special counsel's office promised to file a "detailed" document closer to the sentencing that "sets forth the nature of the defendant's crimes and lies". A jury in Virginia convicted Manafort in the case Mueller brought against him there, where the charges focused on bank fraud and tax fraud allegations that mostly predated the 2016 campaign.

In expressing sympathy for Manafort, Trump has expressed particular admiration for the fact that Manafort stood trial as opposed to "flipping" to secure a more lenient deal with Mueller's team, a concept that the president has suggested should be illegal. Since before Manafort's plea, there have been persistent suggestions that Trump might pardon Manafort, something hinted at by the president's lawyer, former New York Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani.

He faces multiple years in prison.

Manafort has been behind bars since the judge in his DC case revoked his bail in June.

In a court filing on Monday, lawyers working on Special Counsel Robert Mueller's investigation into the alleged Russian interference said Manafort had nullified their agreement to cooperate - charges denied by the 69-year-old.

While not a fatal blow, the failure to secure Manafort's cooperation has damaged the credibility of an individual with deep ties to Russian Federation and who prosecutors had hoped would prove to be a valuable witness, a former federal prosecutor said.

There were signs this month that news could be coming in the case.

Manafort's legal deal disputed Mueller's claims.

A trial scheduled for September in D.C. included charges of money laundering, failing to register as a foreign agent, and obstruction of justice related to his work as a political consultant for Ukraine while it was headed by a Russian-aligned president.

Still, Cotter said, it did not mean Manafort's cooperation had not been of any value, noting that he may have led Mueller to other sources of information. Not only have they demolished Manafort's standing as a witness, by calling Manafort a liar they have poisoned any information the special counsel has developed through his earlier cooperation.

"At some point, Manafort will be sentenced, and at that point there will be a prolonged hearing where there will be witnesses called and information revealed and we will learn that information", Cevallos said. Neither the defense nor the prosecution team has objected to this sentencing date. He reported to serve his 14-day sentence Monday at a prison camp in Wisconsin.

Prosecutors said Gates, who also pleaded guilty, is cooperating in "several ongoing investigations". "To throw that away, to throw that benefit away by continuing to lie to the special counsel's office is incredibly reckless and self-defeating".

The surprise development comes at a critical time for Mueller, who is expected to finalise a report in the coming months on the findings of his 18-month probe into Russia's election meddling and possible collusion with the Trump campaign.
