Protests as Saudi crown prince visits Tunisia

The killing of Khashoggi, a Washington Post columnist and a critic of the crown prince, at Riyadh's consulate in Istanbul six weeks ago has strained Saudi Arabia's ties with the West and battered Prince Mohammed's image overseas.

Bahrain's King Hamad praised strong ties between the two countries as he launched the AB-4 pipeline to celebrate over 70 years of bilateral energy cooperation, Xinhua news agency reported.

"MBS contributed to murdering somebody overseas and it is not strength to sort of mumble past that", Sasse told "Fox News Sunday", referring to the crown prince.

President Trump will meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin but not with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman at the G20 summit this week, the White House said Tuesday.

Mohammed's visit is part of a tour of several Arab countries, his first trip overseas since Khashoggi - a sharp critic of Mohammed - was killed inside a Saudi consulate in Turkey on October 2, triggering global condemnations. The Saudi journalist, who was a USA resident and contributor to The Post, was killed and allegedly dismembered with a bonesaw by a team of Saudi agents after he entered the kingdom's consulate in Istanbul.

"Since the deal was signed by Defense Secretary [James] Mattis and [Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed] bin Salman in Riyadh, there has been minimal activity towards purchasing the defense equipment and arms laid out in the arms agreements and signed", ABC wrote.

Hundreds of Tunisians have been staging the first protests of the Arab world against him, denouncing the kingdom's de facto ruler as a murderer involved in the killing of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi.

"They were asking us to put as much pressure on the Saudis as we could [to buy American arms]", the official told the news agency.

Dozens of protesters gathered in central Tunis on Monday night to protest the prince's arrival Tuesday for talks with the Tunisian president.

He added: "There will be a lot happening" on Saudi Arabia.

But many Tunisians are angry over the killing and suspicions of the prince's involvement.

While the United States president, Donald Trump, has reiterated support for his Saudi ally, going as far as contradicting the CIA's reported assessment that the crown prince ordered Khashoggi's death, the possibility of shaking hands and posing for photos with the Saudi de facto leader pose a headache for the British PM, Theresa May, and the French president, Emmanuel Macron.

Graham also said this: "It's important that we back up the intel community if we think they're right".

In an interview with Sputnik, Saudi energy expert Said al-Shahrani said that "the decision to build a nuclear power plant in the kingdom is the result of serious research that confirmed the need for this step".
