UNC reportedly hiring Mack Brown as next coach

The news comes just a day after the University announced it would not retain Larry Fedora following a 2-9 season.

Mack Brown is returning to North Carolina as its head football coach, 247Sports' Inside Carolina reported Monday, citing unidentified sources.

Following five years away from coaching, the longtime Longhorn coach will return to North Carolina to coach the Tar Heels.

What's old is new again - reportedly. From 1988 to 1997, Brown led the Tar Heels to a record of 69-46-1.

Perhaps there could be some benefit to bringing back a coach like Brown, who is familiar and devoted to improving the program, but it is probably safe to say Brown's potential success at UNC will be reliant on having a strong supporting cast around him. Brown was the 1996 ACC Coach of the Year. Following consecutive one-win seasons, Brown began to turn the program around with a 6-4-1 mark. The Tar Heels were ranked in the top 10 in Brown's final two seasons in Chapel Hill. Those Longhorns teams went 158-48 in Brown's tenure; on two occasions Texas played in the national title game. That will pit Brown against Will Muschamp for the first time since the two were coaches together at Texas. Brown not only will draw the attention for his return to college football but the Tar Heels have their opener scheduled against SC in the Belk Kickoff Classic in Charlotte.

On Sunday, Tom Luginbill, an ESPN college football analyst, and Kirk Bohls, a longtime columnist at the Austin American-Statesman, each indicated that Brown could be the next man in line for the vacant head coaching job at North Carolina, where he was the head coach at for 10 seasons prior to being hired at Texas in December 1997.
