Players hurt by glass and gas in 'disgraceful' bus attack

River Vs Boca Juniors Postponed After Players Attacked With Tear Gas

While it was always expected that the second-leg of tonight's Copa Libertadores final would be a fiery affair, River vs Boca has been postponed following the attack of the former team's bus on arrival at the stadium. Having the desired effect, some of the players on board suffered from the ill-effects of this attack.

CONMEBOL made a decision to delay kick-off by an hour, despite several Boca players being in an unfit state to play the game, but eventually postponed the game until Sunday.

The Superclasico is regarded as one of the football world's greatest rivalries, not just for the play on the pitch (if that even eventuates) but for the potentially chaotic passion of its fans - fully on display when Boca supporters packed out their home stadium simply to witness its players in training before the big final. On that occasion, River were awarded the game.

The official CONMEBOL Twitter account then confirmed that the game had been postponed to a 7.15 PM (10.15 PM GMT) kick-off, an hour later than originally scheduled.

Luckily both River chief Rodolfo D'Onofrio and Boca's Daniel Angelici showed the common sense to dismiss that idea and it was that pair too who, in temporary alliance, made sure that what would have been a risible final in the light of Saturday's events was abandoned.

The vehicle was pelted with rocks, beer bottles and other projectiles, destroying the windows and causing eye injuries to two Boca players, who required hospital treatment.

"I want to say to our families that we are fine because have not had any contact in the changing room". They're forcing us to play.

A statement from Conmebol's medical commission shown on television said some players had suffered "superficial cuts" and that there was no medical reason to suspend the match. However, it does now seem likely that the match will be suspended and take place at a later date. We don't have a leg to stand on: if we have to play, we are going to play.

"The team which loses will carry a cross for the rest of their life", was how Marcelo Matador Salas, the Chilean striker who used to play for River and Lazio, described it.

Trouble continued with thousands of River fans breaking through security, so many without tickets were able to force their way into the stadium.

With so much at stake, the consequences for the losers at Estadio El Monumental could be huge for Argentinian football.
