Mick McCarthy set to finalise Republic of Ireland deal after FAI approach

Ireland are now on the search for a new manager with former head coach Mick McCarthy the frontrunner with the bookies.

The 66-year-old and his assistant, former Manchester United captain Roy Keane, stood aside after they could not stop Ireland being relegated from Group B4.

"It was more go and play a little five-a-side game or an eleven-a-side game".

Mick McCarthy is set to arrive in Dublin this weekend to speak with the FAI, while Dundalk boss Stephen Kenny is also due to meet the association as they begin process of replacing Martin O'Neill as Republic of Ireland manager.

The Independent's Chief Football Writer, Miguel Delaney, reports that the former Real Madrid manager and current Iran boss has expressed an interest in the Ireland vacancy.

McCarthy had a successful first stint in charge of Republic of Ireland, taking them to the last 16 of the 2002 World Cup in South Korea and Japan.

"He won't have players like Shay Given, Richard Dunne, Damien Duff and Robbie Keane to build a team around and while it may have been time for Martin O'Neill to move on, his successor has a hard task".

"I guess that he must have fed ideas off him on whatever he was thinking".

Asked what Keane actually did in the Ireland setup, Doherty paused and then said, per Telegraph: "It wasn't necessarily a case where he [Keane] has taken the session and was doing shape [work]".

The defender also had some kind words to say about the good times during O'Neill's stint as Irish manager.

Earlier in the show, he gave an insight into the team prepared for matches.

"You'd have a few players thinking "we'll play this shape", or someone else thinking something else".

"I don't have PR strategy", he said, "I don't have a dream team".

"When you played with Ireland, you didn't really have that much coaching", Doherty revealed. "There were odd occasions when it did happen".
