His hands were shackled at his waist and Watts wore an orange jumpsuit.

"We love you", Cindy Watts said into a microphone before turning to look directly at her son: "And we forgive you, son".

Both daughters died from smothering, prosecutors said. "Imagine the horror in Bella's mind as her father snuffed out her life. Your children loved you to the moon and back", Sandra Rzucek said, still holding her composure.

Watts, stoic except for a brief moment when he wiped an apparently tear-streaked cheek on his shoulder, apologized for the crime through his court-appointed lawyer Kathryn Herold.

Watts, 33, pleaded guilty this month to first-degree murder and other charges in the deaths of his wife, 34-year-old Shanann, and their daughters, Bella, 4, and Celeste, 3.

"Our families have been needlessly broken by the deaths of Bella, Celeste, Nico, and Shan'ann", said his mom, Cindy Watts.

His sentencing comes days after a woman he had been dating told The Denver Post that he lied to her about being near the end of divorce proceedings. "In my heart, I believe she is somewhere, and I hope she is safe", he told Fox 31 as police searched the house behind him.

A friend asked police to check on Shanann Watts on August 13 after not being able to reach her and growing concerned that the 34-year-old expectant mother had missed a doctor's appointment.

Watts said only two words at the hearing - "no sir", when Judge Marcelo Kopcow asked if he had anything to say. "Your life is between you and God now, and I pray that he has mercy on you". During the conversation, Chris reportedly told Shanann that he wanted a divorce.

Shanann returned home to Frederick, Colorado, from a business trip in the early hours of August 13.

Monday's sentencing hearing is scheduled for 10 a.m.

Shanann's father, Frank Rzucek, said Chris Watts "carried them out like trash". "We just thought we were doing the right thing by being a good friend", added her husband, Nick Thayer.

Prosecutors said Watts strangled his wife and then smothered his daughters before dumping their bodies on an oil site where he used to work.

After authorities found the bodies, Chris Watts changed his story, telling police he had strangled Shanann Watts in a fit of rage after seeing his wife choking Celeste. He also pleaded guilty to two counts of murdering a child, one count of unlawful termination of a pregnancy and three counts of tampering with a deceased human body.

Meanwhile, Christopher Watts spoke to local television reporters from the front porch of the family's home in Frederick; a small town on the plains north of Denver where drilling rigs and oil wells surround booming subdivisions.

Court records revealed that Watts acknowledged to police that he killed his wife.
