Sinema wins in Arizona as Democrats capture a longtime GOP Senate seat

Democratic Rep. Kyrsten Sinema has won Arizona's open U.S. Senate seat, beating Republican Rep. Martha McSally.

Thirdly, the Democrats' win reveals just how miserably Republicans performed in a year in which Democrats held on to or flipped Senate seats in seven states that Trump won in 2016 (Montana, Arizona, West Virginia, Wisconsin, Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania).

In addition to Sinema edging out Rep. Martha McSally to become Arizona's first Democrat senator since 1988, Democrats also captured the statewide office of superintendent of public instruction.

It is the first time a Democrat has held a Senate seat in Arizona since 1995, and ensures the Democrats will fill at least 47 of the Senate's 100 seats, with Florida's race going to a recount and MS awaiting the results of a run-off later this month.

She shifted to the centre after winning a seat in 2012 in the House of Representatives, drawing criticism from some on the left for siding with Mr Trump and other Republicans on some legislation.

On Election Day, Sinema swung by Arizona State University's downtown Phoenix campus to hand out doughnuts and gleefully posed for photos.

The contest drew more than $90 million in spending, including more than $58 million by outside groups, according to Federal Election Commission reports. "These women who act like staying at home, leeching off their husbands or boyfriends, and just cashing the checks is some sort of feminism because they're choosing to live that life", she claimed "That's bulls***".

Sinema, a member of the centrist Blue Dog caucus in the House, had campaigned as a moderate. The former Air Force combat pilot adopted an aggressive tone, accusing Sinema of supporting treason over her 2003 remark that it was "fine" if a radio host who was asking her a question joined the Taliban. At a debate, she called Sinema a traitor to America.

That's a volatile issue in Arizona with its growing, Democratic-leaning immigrant population.

Arizona's Senate race isn't over. She registered for the first time so she could vote for Democrats and against Trump.

She replaces Republican Diane Douglas who was defeated in the GOP primary by Riggs. "We can be good people who care deeply about each other even when we disagree".

Look for Arizona to become a battleground state in 2020. Not only does the party hope it can put the state in play in the presidential race, voters will get to choose the John McCain's permanent successor. Jeff Flake, who declined to seek re-election in the state.

Despite its image as a staunch Republican bastion, Arizona is attracting younger, educated voters from elsewhere in the United States.

Republicans, with the most favourable map in a generation, will pick up at most two seats (depending on the outcome in Florida).
