SKY2 was over the scene where a country music night for college students was being held, according to the bar's website.

Authorities said the gunman died inside the bar but would not say how he died.

'He threw in smoke bombs and he kept firing.

The bar is also close to several other universities, including California State University Channel Islands in Camarillo, Pepperdine University in Malibu and Moorpark College in Moorpark.

The gunman's identity has not yet been released.

The Ventura County Star reported that "officers were advised that the suspect was a Middle Eastern man in his early 20s wearing all black clothing and with a beard".

People hugged after praying before the procession carrying the body of Ventura County Sheriffs Sgt. Ron Helus.

"He went in there to save lives".

Police had multiple run-ins with Long in the past, Dean said.

Helus, who lived in nearby Moorpark, leaves behind his wife and son.

"Ron was a hardworking, dedicated sheriff's sergeant".

"(He) said to her, "Hey I got to go handle a call.

It's thought that a man opened fire at the bar with a semi-automatic gun at about 11.20pm. "I don't know the condition of the victims but my understanding is there are a number (of) wounded included a local deputy ... all of the victims have been transported to hospitals", Fox told CNN on the phone.

People comfort each other near the scene of the shooting. "Even though there's bad in this world, there's a lot of good people", she said. "It's still very fluid, and I hope to give you guys updates in terms of both the number and the status of the shooter".

One couple told CBS2's Tom Wait that their daughter had been injured in the shooting.

There was no screaming, she said.

At least 200 people were reportedly inside the Borderline Bar and Grill, which was hosting a university student night, at the time of the attack.

Bar patron Cole Knapp, 19, told Reuters he saw the gunman walk in and stop at the counter, then he heard gunfire and saw a young woman at the counter shot repeatedly.

A witness who was on the patio area of the bar said she was saved by a stranger after gunshots rang out. I heard these big pops. They carried us and then I reunited with my friends, and I was lucky to get out.

"It's just kind of unbelievable that somebody would want to come to a place I care about and hurt people that I care about".

He said first responders arrived just three minutes after the first emergency calls from the venue were made.
