Polls closing as voters pit Trump strength, Dems' resistance

Nate Silver on Whether Dems Will Take the House

"Congressman Peter King of NY is a hardworking gem". Kirsten Gillibrand and New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo. If Trump manages to pull off a victory in terms of retaining control of one or both Houses, it will be seen as a validation of his stand that poor migrants and refugees from other countries are a threat to the peaceful life of the American people and send out a clear message to the world on what the original "country of migrants" now thinks on that issue.

Campaigning in Ohio, Trump declared that "everything is at stake" as he sought to bolster the campaign of Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine, the Republican candidate for governor. Trump has closed the race with a torrent of lies, mostly about immigration, and a television ad so racist that Fox News announced it would stop airing it.

Trump's usually active Twitter feed was quiet Tuesday as voting booths opened across the country.

Total voter turnout in the county is 51 percent - only 6 percent less than the entire election turnout in the 2014 midterm election.

These elections are known as midterms when they fall outside the four-year presidential election cycle.

Talk-radio host Rush Limbaugh explained on his national broadcast Tuesday: "Focusing first on the early vote, who is it?" Rasmussen notes, "Forty-three percent (43%) of voters say the country is headed in the right direction".

"If they lose this November, the civil war inside the Democratic Party is going to consume them for years and is going to make Donald Trump's re-election in 2020 a forgone conclusion", he said. In the 2010 midterm elections, which were widely viewed as a referendum on then-President Obama and the Affordable Care Act, Republicans picked up 63 House seats and six Senate seats - numbers the Democrats are not expected to hit tonight.

He bet big on a xenophobic closing message, warning of an immigrant "invasion" that promised to spread violent crime and drugs across the nation.

"The president absolutely is the focal point".

Limbaugh said voters are "awakened" by issues such as the made-up attacks on Kavanaugh and the caravan from Honduras heading for the USA with the intention of breaking into the US illegally.

In the House of Representatives (the Congress), elections are on for all 435 seats.

A Democratic win in Tuesday's midterms would be debilitating for Trump and Americans, former White House communications director Anthony Scaramucci says.

Firstly, it would mean the party could block legislation proposed by the president.

"The House has been a rubber stamp for the Trump agenda".

For nearly two years, Trump's rule-breaking, sometimes chaotic administration has enjoyed a free hand from the twin Republican controlled chambers, but the midterms could see him forced to face an opposition with real teeth. Democrats were buoyed by a wave of Republican retirements and an overwhelming fundraising advantage. Party nominees have publicly released their returns for decades. Senate Republicans can continue to confirm judges at record rates.

But Trump earlier in the day appeared to distance himself from the fate of House Republican candidates. "Donald Trump has the pen, and his handwriting isn't always very good".

Many people have already voted. Despite reports from the ground by the media of the struggles of the people walking almost 5,000 miles to the American border, queries are raised on how come they appear so clean and not exhausted at all.

The outcome is clouded by the dramatically different landscape between the House and Senate.

At a rally in West Virginia Friday a defiant Trump brushed off the prospect of a Democratic House takeover.

Trump is stressing Senate contests like Indiana's after sending signals that maintaining the House may be out of reach. Conversely, Republicans would likely need to win 23 of the 30 Toss Up races to keep their majority. Should Abrams win, she would become the first African-American woman to be a governor of a U.S. state.

In cramped aircraft hangars and pack arenas across battleground states, Trump has boasted about the energetic displays of support from his most loyal backers, drawing parallels to his own White House bid.
